Maths Intervention

Congratulations to our Mathemagician of Week 2, Arielle (2C), who has been working with Pauline using our inquiry-based approach to maths intervention instruction.  She is working very hard and making excellent progress.  Keep up the great work, Arielle!

This term in Number Intervention, I will be training some of our Junior School parents in the Early Number domains of the programme, beginning with the essential component of counting. Counting is regarded as an extremely important aspect of early number instruction.  It is very prominent in young children’s early mathematical activity and seems to be virtually a natural and spontaneous activity for children in the first two or three years of school, and also for many pre-schoolers.  Further, it is well known by teachers and others that many children in the middle and upper primary years make extensive use of counting when solving arithmetical problems (ie problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division).  Counting is an essential aspect of the mental computation done by children in the primary years and beyond.

Parent Helper Programme

A very big thank you to the wonderful parents who have volunteered to be my guinea pigs in training to assist in Number Intervention in the classroom. These parents will assist in Prep this year, working with specific children to ensure the best possible outcomes for each and preparing them for their move into Year One.  Next year, the parent training programme will be extended to include working in Years One to Four.  We will gradually implement the Learning Framework in Number across the whole school, aiming to improve Mathematics outcomes for every child.  Please contact me via email to register your interest in the Parent Helper in Maths training course for 2018.  You will require a Working with Children Check to participate.  Looking forward to hearing from you!

Family Life at Galilee

As you will already be aware, Family Life Programs are running in all classrooms over the next few weeks. These programs support the Heath STEAM Inquiry units that students are engaged in at the moment.

Family Life Victoria (FLV) has been delivering School Programs in the classroom setting for over 25 years; offering young people an opportunity to gain accurate, age appropriate information.

The Primary Programs have been developed in alignment with the AusVELS Health Curriculum, the content of the modules are age-specific and interactive, using a variety of discussions, activities and games to create a sensitive, positive and fun experience.

The School Programs are built to complement the health & interpersonal lessons and can assist schools meet curriculum obligations.

We encourage you to talk to your child about these lessons and open up the discussion around families, body parts and functions and change and development.
