Library Corner
At the end of last term we celebrated Australian Reading Hour with quiet reading in the library at lunchtime. It was a chance to relax with a good book and unwind after a busy term!
Why is reading important?
- Reading reduces stress by 68%, relieving stress more quickly than listening to music, going for a walk or having a cup of tea
- Reading a gripping novel causes positive biological changes in the brain that can last for days
- When tested for empathy, readers of narrative fiction achieved significantly higher than other groups
- Reading is closely linked to increasing our understanding of our own identities
For more information, please head to the Australian Reading Hour website.
We also held our Term 3 Library Monitor morning tea, which is a small reward for our hard working volunteers! A very big thank you to our Term 3 Library Monitor MVP Freya Matthews. Freya shows initiative by undertaking important library tasks without being asked, including shelving books, tidying our space, and helping to promote the library services to her peers.
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge has now wrapped up for 2018. We would like to extend our congratulations to the following students who completed the PRC this year:
Year 7: Lily Nicolo, Leo Bizas, Diksha Padmakumar, Pranjal Menariya, Casper Fforde-Lutter, Bhrugu Patel, Rusha Shah, Farhan Andalib, Dana Gonshor, Roni Segal, Lexi Nuelant, Anjana Sivaraman, Erin McNaughton, Amiya Panwar, Edison MacLeod-Smith, Safal Gandhi, Dheeraj Erla, Scott Rodgers & Elijah McNamara
Year 8: Alicia Scott
Year 9: Meret Hau & Tracey Kry
These students were awarded their certificates during year level assemblies. The challenge is to read at least 15 books and log them on the PRC website. However, many of these students read over 100!
Horror books written for a teenage audience have seen a surge in the publishing industry in 2018, and the genre has been incredibly popular this year at GEC. Our impressive collection of books fly off the shelf! With Halloween just around the corner, we have put up a display with many of our scariest, most mysterious titles. Come and check it out if you’re feeling brave!
Finally, we would like to wish our Year 12s all the very best on their next adventures. If that includes exams: don’t forget to keep borrowing from our VCE collection to help with your study and revision! We have plenty of great resources for all subjects. Good luck and thank you for being great supporters of the library this year!
