Health & PE Week
The first week of term 4, Glen Eira College celebrated Health and Physical Education Week. A week to celebrate different ways to be active and healthy and foster community amongst the school.
The first day back of term the weather gods were shining down on us giving us a beautiful sunny day to hold the GEC walkathon. This allowed students and teachers to enjoy a nice stroll enjoying all the benefits that walking can bring, including: stronger bones and improved balance, increased muscle strength and endurance, increased cardiovascular fitness and last but not least an enjoyable social occasion.
On Tuesday students enjoyed some fruit for a healthy recess option while participating in Jump Rope for Heart, 3 on 3 basketball and an AFLW game. The students devoured the fruit leaving nothing; showing their desire for a healthy snack. Jump Rope for Heart is a great initiative created by the Heart Foundation to raise money through skipping for those affected by cardiovascular disease.
The last activity for the week was the much anticipated GEC AFLW exhibition match with Team Filippidis taking on Team Zander. Team Filippidis was made up of Year 11s, although knowing each other very well, they were up against a strong outfit made up of Year 7s, 8s and 9s for Team Zander. The first half saw Team Zander dominate the scoring leaving Team Filippidis and her girls puzzled. Half time came soon enough and the girls were able to reassess their strategies to bring about an inspired comeback in the second half. However it was left too late with Team Zander able to seal the win with a late goal. The girls demonstrated tremendous amounts of determination, grit, teamwork and sports(wo)manship highlighting the important lessons that sport can have.
What a great week!
