Assistant Principal News

As our busy Term 1 draws to a close, it is important to reflect upon our individual successes both within the sphere of learning as well as in relation to the achievement of our own personal goals.

Earlier this term all students created Growth Goals to help focus their direction. These goals revolved around their academic and well-being pursuits and setting an achievable outcome by the end of this term. Next term, all students will be either reshaping their current goal or creating another one to focus on. I encourage you to have a conversation about their goals and look for ways to assist them in the pursuit of success.

This week we were visited by over 150 Year 6 students from various primary schools in town. These students were lucky enough to experience a practical science lesson as well as an Ancient History lesson. This is the beginning of our Transition Program which enables students to gain an insight into the everyday life at Marian, become more familiar with their surroundings as well as beginning to develop relationships with their peers and staff. We look forward to welcome them again next term and thank all of the staff involved in making it such a successful day.

Our Year 9 students were also lucky enough to participate in the Year 9 Narrative Days last week. Students participated in writing workshop activities to build skills and confidence in imaginative and narrative writing. The photos below are evidence of the enthusiasm and energy that was present during the two day program. A big thank you must go to Miss Suidgeest, Mr Mason, Mr Abou-Nasr and Mr Lawler for their organisation, delivery and supervision.

I also wish to commend students, staff and parents for their attendance at Wednesday’s Parent/Teacher/Student Conference Evening. Our College Hall was a hive of energy with record numbers of parents and students attending and participating in constructive learning conversations with teachers. I encourage students and parents to now collate the feedback they received from teachers and create a plan to implement this advice in order to enhance their learning.

Finally, I would like to remind all staff, students and parents that Monday April 29th will be a Professional Learning Day for staff. Students will return to School on Tuesday April 30th. During the Professional Learning Session, staff will participate in workshops aimed at building skills and knowledge in using student data to inform their practice, and in turn improve student learning.

I would like to thank everyone for their efforts during Term 1, and wish you a restful and enjoyable holiday break.

NAPLAN INFORMATION TO PARENTS/CARERS

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy – important skills that each child needs to succeed in school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

Between May 14th and May 24th 2019, our school will participate in NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.

If you have any questions about NAPLAN Online, please contact your child’s teacher.
