Principal's Report

Nazareth – a place of Faith, Wisdom and Knowledge

Dear all

Nazareth College is a central hub for so much.  It caters for all and provides everyone with a multitude of opportunities.  It is where our Community experiences a variety of lifelong experiences – where young people grow into responsible adolescents and young adults.

Last Thursday, the College celebrated Nazareth Day – a Community celebration that began with a full school Assembly.  Symbolically, the Assembly was attended by students, staff and parents.  It allows all vested parties to celebrate what Nazareth College stands for.

Students' outstanding attributes were acknowledged.  Students received Faith, Wisdom and Knowledge awards.  These are significant awards given to students across the College.  Only one Faith, Wisdom or Knowledge award can be presented to a student in his or her six years at the College.

2017 Awardees were:

Also, the Top 10 academic students from Year 7 to 11 were acknowledged for attaining fantastic results in Semester 1.  These students are acknowledged in order to pay tribute to their hard work and also to inspire other students to achieve their best in Semester 1.  Their names are listed below:

There was a multitude of other noteworthy awards with a musical performance entertaining the audience.

One of the most significant events was when Brianna Kotnik together with Margo Hagan and Caitlin Mackay introduced Ben Thomson.  Ben, a victim of a 'One Punch Can Kill' incident, was introduced to the College.  Ben's story had the full attention of all who sat within the Auditorium.

His story was expressed through Ms Caitlin Mackay, who was able to encapsulate Ben's story in a PowerPoint presentation.  Ben is unable to speak clearly.  However, he is so determined to continue to improve and become totally independent.

Part of this speech was to launch a fund raising initiative to raise in excess of $5,000 so that Ben can purchase a $40,000 upright wheelchair.  Students will be raising money in order to assist him in his quest to stand upright.

If you are inspired and would like to support Ben, please donate to:

If donating online, please make reference to Nazareth in your comment so that this can be included in our fundraising tally!

Following the Assembly, it was time to have some fun and indulge in food, games, more fun and activities.  All Houses were responsible for setting up activities on the day to raise funds for their House charities.

In the afternoon, a yearly Nazareth Talent Quest takes place.  This year, there were 14 competitors.  Each one of them was outstanding.  It is amazing to experience how much talent is present and how students have the courage to put themselves forward in the presence of the entire school.  I congratulate all students on taking the opportunity to perform.

The Winner for 2017 was Vanessa Mafrici (accompanied by her sister Madeline Mafrici). Vanessa was so inspirational.  Despite her fear and nerves, she was able to have the courage to sing, accompanied by her sister.  She demonstrated that, despite the 'odds', you need to take every opportunity to utilise the hidden talents within yourself.

So, my first Nazareth Day has left everlasting memories and it reinforces why Nazareth is such a fantastic school!

In a similar spirit of celebrating talent, I congratulate Hamed Afshin Azar (Year 11 MacKillop 4) for his tremendous efforts in his latest Swimming competition – 2 Golds, 3 Silvers and a record in the 100 metres Backstroke.  Congratulations Hamed.  We hope that this will assist you in making your dream come true.

Also, we congratulate Joshua Varga (Year 10 Chisholm 1) who is a talented Soccer player and will be travelling to Malaysia to represent Australia.  Well done Joshua!
