Year 5 Report

Term 1 2021

End of Term 1

Well done to all Grade 5's on such a wonderful beginning to the school year.

Students have undertaken some exciting learning experiences already with even more ahead throughout the year.

We are very excited for those students attending camp in Week 9. We know they will have a very rewarding time! Students not attending camp have some fun and challenging tasks planned at school.

Reading

In Reading this term, Grade 5 students have explored a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. These texts have developed our understanding of genre and features. We have explored fiction and non-fiction texts about space, which have helped us develop our vocabulary and understanding of our solar system which we have used in our Science Fiction Narratives. The Grade 5's have developed and used a variety of strategies while reading, such as locating key words in questions, skimming and scanning a text and making predictions about text types to improve their understandings. Students have continued to expand their vocabulary through the discovery and unpacking of new words which they are using in their writing tasks.

Writing

In Writing, Grade 5 students have written a number of Science Fiction Narratives. We have focused on the essential story elements, such as setting, characters, problems, key events and solutions. Students have had opportunities to add figurative language to up level their writing. The Grade 5's have further developed their understanding and use of writing conventions such as dialogue and punctuation featured in a story.   All students will  publish and share their Science Fiction stories with their classmates this Term.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Grade 5 students have built upon their understanding of counting and place value through a variety of hands on experiences. Students have used various mathematical strategies when solving problems. Students have worked on unpacking worded math problems as well, identifying the maths required to solve the problem before selecting an appropriate strategy. We are currently delving into time and time related problems.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Grade 5 students have carried out investigations based their own wonderings around the topic of Health. Students have developed key questions to research, collected and classified information and will present their findings in a various ways. Grade 5's were also fortunate to experience and learn about basic first aid and CPR.  St Johns Ambulance Victoria attended our classrooms to demonstrate the best way to respond to an emergency.
