Year 3 Report
End Of Term 1!
End of Term 1 already!! What a busy, but fantastic first term it has been in Grade 3. All students have settled in well and we are starting to see some really good learning.
Term 1 has seen some exciting events within the school. We had a great time at Family Maths Night, sharing our learning and playing some great maths games with our families. We were also lucky enough to be able to participate in The Fathering Project launch which took place on the 17th March. The students had a great time with their fathers and male role models, with one of our own Grade 3 students taking out first prize in the paper plane contest. Go Grade 3!!
Student Action Team
The Grade 3 team would like you to join us in congratulating our new Student Action Team Members for 2021! The students had the opportunity to vote for a student that they believed would represent them well and lead Grade 3 through a variety of initiatives aimed to improve the school environment for all. We look forward to working with these young leaders and watch their confidence and abilities as leaders grow and develop.
Mathematics
In Term 1 we have done a lot of work with counting and place value. We have practiced different skip counting patterns with a strong focus on our 2's, 5's and 10's. This will be an ongoing focus throughout the year with the hope that by the end of the year we will have cemented our understanding of our 2's, 5's, 10's, 3's and 7's.
We have also spent a lot of time developing a really strong understanding of our place value system. We have done this through a variety of activities that involved naming, representing and ordering numbers, as well as expanding and renaming numbers. This strong understanding of how our number system works, will give our students the knowledge and skills they need to be able to successfully navigate other areas of mathematics, such as addition and subtraction, both of which we will look at in Term 2.
Reading
This term we have looked at a variety of reading skills that will help students to develop a really good understanding of what they are reading. Through the use of rich, engaging texts we have looked at retelling and summarising, main idea, comparing different points of view and cause and effect. The students have also spent time developing their reading stamina and enjoyment of reading through independent reading time. During this time students are reading their Lexile books that they have chosen themselves from a selection of books at their current level.
Writing
We began the term looking at realistic narratives. This was an enjoyable way to begin our writing for the year with students being able to use their imagination to plan, draft and publish some great realistic narratives. We have since moved on to writing persuasive texts with students practicing the skill of persuasion through the use of techniques such as emotive language, repetition and rhetorical questions. We will continue to develop our persuasive writing at the beginning of Term 2.
Students are also developing their confidence and love of writing through short 10 minute warm ups where students are given a writing prompt and are free to write whatever they like in response to the prompt. These short writing tasks allow students to write purely for the enjoyment of it and we are seeing some great work come from these warm ups.
Inquiry
In Inquiry this term we have investigated what a citizen is and what it means to be a good citizen within our school, suburb, state and country. We have also looked at what rules and laws are and the need for consequences when these rules and laws are broken. Next term we will start to look at what it means to be healthy.
