SSATIS Head of the River marks spectacular end to 2021 rowing season

Grey and misty skies at Lake Barrington.

St Mary's College put its best crews forward for the annual SSATIS Head of the River Regatta, which was held at the picturesque Lake Barrington on Saturday 13 March.

Despite the wet weather and often challenging conditions, our rowers took to the water with determination, commitment and enthusiasm to in turn achieve some wonderful results across all year groups.

Highlights for SMC included winning the girls' junior shield for the most points and placing second in the senior shield.

Competitors were buoyed by the energetic crowd that the lined the banks of the river to cheer them on during the course of the day.

For Rowing Coordinator, Liz Carter, the event was a bittersweet end to the season, also marking the culmination of her rowing career at SMC.

Anyone involved with rowing at the College would attest to the enormous contribution that Liz has brought to the sport since taking over the helm—in the past four years, the club has increased from 15 rowers to 75.

On reflecting on her time at the club, Liz said: 'The thing I have enjoyed the most is seeing the pride and confidence in the girls grow and to watch them feel part of a crew, and to take charge of their boat on the water.'

Congratulations to all rowers on a fantastic final regatta for the season, and thank you to our rowing coaches, families, staff, alumni and support crews.

Special congratulations must go to our Year 12 rowers who enjoyed their last row for SMC: Gabby Woodhouse, Phoebe Teale, Ella Taylor, Anneka Schrader, Ava McInerney, Amelia Roberts and Chelsea Stanley.

Term 1 sports update

What a great start to 2021 with over 55 Senior School students participating in Term 1 soccer, cricket and basketball!

It's been great to see a mix of new and existing players all try their hand at the different sports while making new friends, learning a different skill and enjoying the last days of the Tasmanian summer.

As we start to wrap up our Term 1 rosters, I would like to wish all teams the best of luck for finals, as well as thank all of our parent volunteers who have offered to help out with coaching, managing and team supervision. As you can imagine, without their assistance we wouldn't be able to offer so many different sports or enter all the different teams.

Next time you see your coach or team manager, make sure you thank them!
