Swimming - Country Regionals

The KWS Swimming Team competed at their very first carnival for 2021 at the recent NSW Country Regional Championships held in Orange over the weekend of the 24th & 25th January. Held over two days the meet was a great opportunity for many of the younger team members to improve their PB’s and get closer to the NSW Country & State QT’s. There were many outstanding races over the weekend in very hot conditions.

Day One saw Charlotte Williams, 10yrs, swim her way to her first NSW Country QT in the 100m BK, she continued through the meet with PB’s in all events. Chloe Provost had a great meet with PB’s in all races & a huge 4.59sec improvement in the 11yrs 100m Free to qualify for NSW Country. Thomas Pell swam a whopping 3.89sec PB in the 14yrs 100m Fly and a .70sec PB in the 50m Free to add to his NSW Country swims. Matthew Lowther swam a great 3.99sec PB in the 11yrs 100m BK to cement his spot at NSW Country and had an impressive 100% PB rate in all races. Emily Clunas joined the NSW Country Team with a PB in the 13yrs 100m Free and had a great weekend with many PB’s. Collette Lyons swam her first 1500m Free and did a great job swimming an Australian Age QT. Well done to all swimmers with many more PB’s swum over the two days, to many mention individually.

Rowing Success

We achieved some fantastic results at the NSW State Championships Rowing Regatta on Sunday 7th February.

We are officially the top school in the state – coming in 4th behind Sydney Uni, UTS and Sydney Rowing Club. What a great achievement for a regional school. https://regattas.rowingnsw.asn.au/regattas/5158/medals

We took home 6 GOLD medal events, 3 SILVER medal events and 2 BRONZE medal events.

Our School Boy Four, Alec Hoskin, Charlie Neville, Harry Houghton, Nick Brown and Lucinda McCarten took home a SILVER medal in the final. Finishing behind Shore in less than a second. A huge result for the boys, they worked hard to cross that finish line in a nail biting race.

Our Senior Girls Four were most impressive – a big congratulations to these girls Audrey Gill, Ayla Ryan, Georgia Sweetapple, Ella Kirby and Cailan McKay bringing our first GOLD medal home for the weekend! These girls will continue to have an incredible season. Audrey learnt how to row only 12 weeks ago, a fantastic achievement for all girls.

Senior Girls First Eight (Bella Scammell, Freya Neville, Hannah Richardson, Annabelle woods, Lucy Searle, Lucy Scammell, Liv Fredrickson, Sally Carter and Georgia Robson), had the most incredible race of the day. After shaking off all the nerves and winning the heat against Queenwood and Loreto Normanhurst, the girls fought hard in an intense final – beating Pymble and coming in 0.78 seconds behind Queenwood to bring home a SILVER medal. The most incredible racing I’ve seen all season, very proud of these girls in their first race together! If you go back and watch this race, you’ll be sure to be sitting on the edge of your seat.

The senior boys quad made the final, a tough race to finish the day – congrats to Sterling Graham, Louis Maxwell, Alex Brown, Archie Lamont and Xanthe St Clair.

Our Schoolgirl Quads had a big weekend of racing.  A great final race with Bella, Freya, Hannah, Annabelle and Georgia bringing home a GOLD medal in the final!

The Super Lucy Double – Lucy Searle and Lucy Scammell receiving a GOLD in the under 17 event.

Our top Year 9s raced in our Under 16 event. Without much racing experience the kids did an excellent job. The boys worked hard in the heat to make it through to the A Final – Congratulations to Hugh Gordon, Campbell Miller, Callum Brown, George Wakem and Matt Davis. Our girls had a challenging heat and just missed out on the final – a huge effort and a great opportunity for race practice. Well done Phoebe Neville, Hannah McKay, Tessa Lawson, Tara McCormack and Zoe Bird.

The Schoolgirl Singles was the most competitive event of the day on Sunday! With 8 of our girls entered, we had 3 girls in the final. Through tough heats, and semi-finals well done to Bella Scammell for taking out the GOLD and Freya Neville taking out BRONZE in this event.

Alec Hoskin did an incredible job in the Schoolboy Single to get into the final with an excellent race in the heats and semis, and a very well done for Will Crawford in his races against tough competition.

Our Schoolboy doubles were exceptional – both crews winning heats and making it into the finals. Well done Harry Houghton and Sterling Graham, and just missing out on 3rd place to Nick Brown and Charlie Neville.

The Under 17 Girls Quad was the race of the day!! These girls were incredible, and have remained undefeated the entire season. Lily Robson, Ayla Ryan, Lucy Scammell, Lucy Searle and Jayde Caro won GOLD in their race… Well done!

The Under 17 Boys Quads were in some tough heats. Our first crew made it into the final, and having an exceptional race JUST got beaten over the line but brought home a very proud BRONZE medal for the club. Well done to Will Chamberlain, Fletcher Smith, Zac Annett, Ethan Shaw and Taylah Hobbs – exceptional racing!

Our girls in the Schoolgirl Doubles were on about their 8th 2km race of the weekend… their stamina and endurance are exceptional! A very tough race for both crews. Congratulations to both crews making the final, for Bella Scammell and Freya Neville for bringing another SILVER medal to the table.

The champion race of the weekend goes to Lucy Searle in the Under 17 Single event – one of the first weekend competing in 2km events and probably her 8th 2km, she took home a GOLD medal and won by 10 seconds! Just incredible, well done. Great work to Lucy Scammell for making the final, very proud of both girls.

Both Bella Scammell and Freya Neville won a GOLD in the Under 19 Quad event with Sydney Rowing Club and Alec Hoskin won a SILVER medal in his quad – well done!

Some of our Rowers competed in 10 x 2km races over the weekend – an outstanding effort.

Last weekend we also competed at the KINGS/PLC Regatta. A huge congratulations to all our Year 8 Girls for competing in their first Regatta.

Well done to those Year 8 Girls who won themselves a medal on the podium – Georgie Miller, Ava Beusnel, Lilly Weekes, Lucy McIsaac, Lil Pearce, Jemima Scammell and Maggie Kirby!

Please join me in congratulating the Rowers, their hard work and determination over the past few months has really paid off.

Cricket Report

All results, scores, draws and ladders can be found here: http://kinrosswolaroischool.nsw.cricket.com.au/

The weather has proven the biggest adversary to KWS cricket over the last two weeks with two ODJCA rounds and one ODCA round washed out over the last two Saturdays. There has still been plenty of cricket though with some catch-up fixtures from last holidays being played and the KWS Wiburd team having their first fixture of the competition (report below) defeating Arndell AC to move to the quarter finals. There are only two rounds of ODJCA cricket to go before finals and we wish the best of luck to all players to end the season on high notes and hopefully make the finals. Lastly, at time of writing the 1st XI are due to play Pacific Hills CS, Dural, in their first Douglas Shield fixture on Wednesday 17 February at KWS Main.

Reports

Wiburd Shield Round 3 v Arndell AC, 10 February 2021

KWS 6/243 comprehensively defeated Arndell AC 81. KWS hosted the fixture on John Sharpe Oval with a well prepared wicket and enticing short boundaries. AAC won the toss and chose to bowl, wanting to see what he pitch would do before batting. It was a fair decision as early movement made victim to opener Dan Hunter without scoring with a vicious off-cutter rattling the pegs. Harry Priest (29) and Charlie Tink (92) steadied the ship and quickly accelerated to 5 runs an over, putting pressure back on a young AAC attack who had several Year 7s on debut. After Priest’s dismissal, Dudley Shepherd (32) continued to apply pressure and if not for getting out, looked like joining Tink on a massive partnership. As it was, Tink, who built a mature but positive innings, was assisted with cameos from Hugh Thompson (27) and Charlie Condon (26). Condon particularly took advantage of the short boundaries with several sixes square of the pitch.

In reply, the KWS lunch time was well timed as a crowd gathered to clap-in our opening bowlers. Harry Priest (6/18) was superb and took key wickets including AAC’s best bat with a sharp low catch to Tink in gully. Priest was well supported by Hugh Thompson (3/23) and a runout from Tom Storer added to the impressive bowling and fielding display to finish off AAC’s chase at 81.

Arndell were wonderful guests. Polite and showing great sportsmanship. Thank you to their school for travelling to Orange. Also, thanks to umpires Chris King and Malcolm Campbell, the KWS kitchen for lunch and KWS groundstaff for preparing a quality wicket.

KWS will play the winners of Northern Beaches CS v Macarthur AS away.

1st XI v Rugby Union

Round 11 of the BOIDCA first grade competition saw the Kinross 1st XI team pitted against the highly placed Rugby Union side. The Morse Park pitch had not been completely protected from the rain, and a delayed start was needed to allow some wet patches to dry out. Rugby Union won the toss and elected to bowl on the soft pitch. KWS openers Walter Prowse and Charlie Tink started slowly, scoring at just 1 run per over for the first 11 overs, until a flurry of quick wickets allowed the Rugby bowlers to attack the KWS lower order, as Kinross fell from 0-12 to 5-36. Tom Kiss played a lone hand in the KWS innings, scoring 47 of Kinross’ 80, before being eventually dismissed by Percival Raveneau. The Kinross bowling attack made some significant inroads against the strong Rugby batting lineup; A team featuring multiple Western representatives finished the day at an uncharacteristically low 8-100. Mac Webster (3-23), George Cumming (2-22), Nelson Shepherd (1-20) and Walter Prowse (2-13) all took important wickets during KWS’ fielding innings. Kinross also were very sharp in the field, not dropping a catch throughout their 26 fielding overs.

Rugby Union declared at the start of day 2 without facing a ball, as rain clouds threatened to completely cancel the second day. Charlie Tink and Walter Prowse once again started well for Kinross, batting with positive intent in wet conditions and taking Kinross to a second innings lead. Charlie Tink was dismissed by a non-spinning delivery from Jameel Qureshi on 16 and became the only wicket of the day when rain stopped play shortly after. KWS finished at 1-37, with Walter Prowse and Mac Webster finishing on 17 and 4 not out respectively.
