the Deputy Principal

Mr James Boyd

It never ceases to amaze me the opportunities that our students have to take part in a wide range of activities here at Kinross. I would encourage all our students to explore and consider taking on some of these different openings during their time with us. As the saying goes: ‘it is better to look back on life and say, “I cannot believe I did that!” than to look back and say, “I wish I did that…”

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Last week saw the Junior School Swimming Carnival and it was wonderful to see our Senior School students helping with this event. A group of our Duke of Edinburgh Award students were involved in timekeeping, lifesaving and assisting with marshalling. I received a note praising their efforts, not just for their accurate capturing of times, but also for their encouragement of students as they completed their events. As was pointed out to me, these students embodied the philosophy of leadership by students, for students. Thank you to the following:

Charlie Fielding, Oscar Harding, Tilly Quigley, Ava Peterson, Scarlett McKenzie, Iona Anderson, Sophie Mahlo, Ellen Arundell, Maddie Sinclair, Anna Robinson, Audrey Hedley, Niamh Webster, Jess Taylor, Molly McCarten, Matilda Brennan, Nina Smedley, Zoe Bird and Sophie Smith.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a fantastic programme and one that develops several key skills. These skills include:

  • Self-belief and self-confidence
  • Initiative and a sense of responsibility
  • Time management
  • Learning from and giving to others in the community
  • Problem solving, communication and presentation skills.

Further information about the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at KWS can be found in this edition of the bulletin. I would urge students to speak with Mr. Callaghan and encourage them to get involved with this program.

Cadets

On the themes of leadership and further supporting our local community, last Sunday, our Cadets were involved in commemorating those who conducted National Service between 1959-1972 at the National Servicemen’s Day. Our Cadet Unit provided a catafalque party (Sophia Bird, Griffin Robinson, Josie Mitchell, Jess Moseley) commanded by Emma Choi and two flag orderlies (Alice Aldersey and Elizabeth Kwa). It was great to hear reports on how well our CUOs represented both the Unit and the School.

The service was also attended by Federal MP Andrew Gee, State MP Phil Donato and the Mayor of Orange, Reg Kidd.
