Around The Primary

Dear Parents,

The students from Years 4 - 6 thoroughly enjoyed the Interhouse Swimming Carnival yesterday and it was great to see so many parents and grandparents supporting this special event too.

As the Carnival progressed, a number of elements became clear. Firstly, the attitude and behaviour of our students was amazing. Secondly, the support our students gave to each other was terrific - the pats on the back, the compliments they shared and the smiles on their faces after completing a race were great to see and definitely the highlights of the Carnival.

Bravo to all the competitors - you certainly made us proud!

Congratulations to Ward our Champion House for 2021. Well done to St Louis for their amazing cheering – they were awarded the Spirit Award.

Our appreciation is extended to Mr Williams for organizing our carnival and to all the hard-working staff and parent volunteers.

We can now look forward to the Interschool Swimming Carnival on Thursday 18 March at Newman College.

Kind regards,

Antoinette De Pinto

Head of Primary

8 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD TO GET ORGANISED

  1. Keep a family calendar. Track everyone's activities on a prominent and accessible calendar, encouraging your child to write their own entries and reference the calendar when making plans. You also might consider checking schedules and updating the calendar as a family over Sunday breakfast!
  2. Introduce checklists. Whether it's as simple as "3 Things To Do Before Bed" or "What I need each day at school?" creating and referring to lists together will develop your child's ability to complete set tasks and organise their time.
  3. Assign chores that involve sorting or categorizing. Grocery shopping, emptying the dishwasher, sorting washing, cleaning out a closet.
  4. Get ready the night before. This one's always tough —but it does work if you can get in the habit. Pack the school bag, collect instruments, charge devices etc
  5. Build "clean-up" time into the daily routine. Use containers and closet organisers. If there's a place for everything, children find it easier to find items and clean up.
  6. Check the school bag nightly
  7. Establish a routine for reading homework
  8. Provide support with organizational tasks. Your child may find organising a challenge, so help them develop their routine and give the occasional treat for jobs well done!

CANTEEN USE GUIDELINES

  • Year 1 students can only order lunch and are not able to visit the canteen at recess or lunch time
  • Year 2 – 6 students can order lunch and visit the canteen at lunch time to buy 1 item
  • Students cannot purchase items for friends
  • It is recommended students visit the canteen as a special treat once a week (maybe on their birthday!)
  • It is preferred that all students bring morning tea each day

'Be More' - Compassion

This week our Project Compassion focus was on the virtue of ‘Compassion’.

Compassion motivates people to go out of their way to help the physical, spiritual, or emotional hurts and pains of another. It comes from love, wanting to take the pain away from someone else and holding on to hope that something good will come out of a difficult situation.

Students have participated in numerous activities about the virtue of ‘Compassion’. It has been wonderful listening to their thoughts and seeing them practising compassion for others each day.

This week when discussing the virtue ‘Compassion’ the Year 2 students read a story called ‘Room on our Rock’ written by Kate Temple. This clever book is one story that can be read in two ways. When read from front to back the seals say there is no room for anyone else on the rock. When read from back to front the seals welcome others onto the rock. The students discussed the importance of sharing and how good it makes you feel when you show compassion towards others.

The Year 2 students all agreed:

Reading the book from front to back, the seals were not nice because they were saying “Get off our rock!” The mean seals said to the Mum and the baby seal “Go away, this is our home not yours!”. This was mean because there was still room on the rock!

Reading the book the other way, all the students agreed that the seals were being very nice and showed compassion to the Mum and the baby seal when they said, “There is plenty of room, come on!” This time they cared about all the other seals.

Primary Music

The Primary students have been singing up a storm this term in classroom music, liturgical singing and choir. The Junior Primary students have learnt a new song with ‘hello’ in different languages (including Noongar, French and Italian, with Japanese on the list for next week).  If there is a language that is special to your family, we would love to hear how you say hello!

The students in Wanju Voices and Primary Singers have been working hard in rehearsals and are very excited about their first performance next Friday (12 March) at the Primary Assembly. Due to restricted seating, parents of choir members are invited to attend the pre-assembly performance at 8:35am in Roncalli Hall. With this special performance coming up, it is essential that all Wanju Voices and Primary Singers members attend rehearsal next week. Wanju Voices rehearses on Monday mornings 7:30am-8:30am and Primary Singers rehearses from 8:00am-8:40am on Thursday mornings.

The Ukulele Ensemble had its first rehearsal for 2021 last Tuesday. The students revised the essential elements from last year and started learning some new chords. Year 6 students are welcome to join this ensemble (which rehearses at lunchtime on Tuesdays in the Primary Music Room).
