A campus experience

Our Open Day this weekend provides an opportunity for prospective families to experience some aspects of life at John XXIII College. I am always thrilled when our current students are keen to act as tour guides and assist with displays and performances. Although we are blessed with a beautiful campus, it is the calibre of our students and staff that defines our College.

I attended a Principals’ meeting last weekend with a guest speaker from the tertiary sector and I was struck with the similarities of the aspirations of school and tertiary education. Amit Chakma is the Vice Chancellor of the University of Western Australia (UWA); a role he commenced in 2020. He spoke of three key components of a good university:

  1. Teaching
  2. Scholarship/Research
  3. Service

At John XXXII College we are first and foremost a Catholic school with Teaching/Learning and Christian Service as essential components. The Vice Chancellor of UWA also suggested that the strength of the university lies in its campus experience as distinct from remote and online learning.

The past twelve months has been a time of rapid learning and change for the world. Adaptability and resilience have been central to many workplaces including education. However, in schools nothing replicates quality face-to-face interactions between students and staff. I certainly recommend this week’s Open Day to families.

For our current students and families wishing to find out more about post school pathways, I commend to you the following link https://pathways.johnxxiii.edu.au/ Thank you to our Head of Pathways, Ms Lyn Alexander, for providing the link which has a wealth of information for students and their families. We live in an evolving but exciting world.
