School for Student Leadership

Reflections

By Dylan

Words truly cannot express how extensive my gratitude is for being here at the School for Student Leadership (SSL). The SSL is quite literally my dream school having come into fruition. Having a new curriculum that now focusses its classes on 9 learning concepts that include emotional management and resilience, I have deep admiration for. This school has taught and encouraged me to take more initiative and to explore who I am. It has also enabled me to continuously keep articulating myself into the best person that I can be, through allowing me to perceive myself in new ways. It has strengthened and developed my independence even further, and has taught me to have even greater depth of vision to the consequences of my actions. To pull all this together, I believe that the School for Student Leadership aims to create a solid foundation within each and every person who walks in their front doors; that they are confident will be the grounds in which many successes will flourish from.  We have three classes throughout the day. The morning class is divided into two sessions, with morning tea breaking it up. We then have an afternoon class and a night class. All of our classes, as mentioned, are focused around 9 learning concepts. These are learning strategies, emotional management, empathy, resilience, collaboration, environments, respectful relationships as well as health and wellbeing. I feel that these are profound topics to base classes on, and have found much benefit from the information being taught from and about them. A highlight so far being here at the SSL would most definitely been having gone on our first expo. Being able to hike and camp together as an expo group, was such an amazing experience. We got to see how others react in and during particular situations, as well as get the opportunity to learn more about one another in a different environment. Overall, being here at the SSL is something that has provided me with greater understanding about myself and others. I highly recommend the SSL to anyone who wishes to put a foot forward, to positively enhance their life.

My time here at the school for student leadership (SSL), has been an experience that one could never forget. The SSL has showed me a new way of learning from a new perspective, in which I’m truly grateful for. They have taught us here about the importance of nine learning concepts (being learning strategies, resilience, emotion management, identity, empathy, respectful relationships, collaboration, conflict styles, health & wellbeing and environments). Not only have they taught us these learning concepts inside a classroom, but they have let us take these leaning concepts into action outside of the classroom which has been very affective for me. An example of when we could put our learning concepts into practice was bridge building. We had to make a bridge using logs, rope and using some knots that we had been taught. This day was a great day to use these nine learning concepts in a real situation where we needed to work as a team to get the job done. This was a great but tiring day for my group. Overall, this program is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young people such as myself, to improve their learning skills and have the ability to meet new people and make friendships that will last for a lifetime.

Here at the SSL, I’ve made some unforgettable memories that I’ll cherish forever.

I feel that I have improved since being here at the SSL in many different ways. An example of this is being able to feel more empathy for others when telling their stories or in doing everyday tasks. I also am improving on achieving my goals and expressing my thoughts and ideas in my expo group.

Here at the SSL, we don’t do normal classes. We have nine learning concepts that we base our classes around. These are learning strategies, emotional management, resilience, identity, empathy, respectful relationships, health & wellbeing, collaboration and environments. And our classes all link in with day-to-day tasks.

At the SSL we do many actives including bridge building over the VIC river, mountain bike riding in the bush and expo which is a bush camp for a couple of days. On expo 1 we walked 8km in the first day and 9km the next day. We have made so many new relationships with students all around Victoria

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am so grateful to be having this amazing experience.
