We look after others and ourselves.

Kalinda Crews

It has been so exciting to have our Kalinda Crews up and running for the past month. The buzz around the school in anticipation has been awesome and the excitement in the students when they return to their classes is lovely to see. For students and teachers, the opportunity to connect with people they don’t normally see regularly is so special.

One of our Wellbeing goals this year is to increase connections between staff, students and the community after the tricky covid year that we all experienced and Kalinda Crews is a vital moment in our fortnight to do just that!

So what does a Kalinda Crew session look like?

We are very lucky to have a wonderful, capable and responsible group of Grade 6 students who have stepped up to the challenge of leading their crew through the activities each fortnight. The students are provided with a lesson plan that they familiarise themselves with and then discuss with their Crew teacher, which part or parts they will run.

The students in Foundation and Grade 1 are escorted to and from their Kalinda Crew room by their buddy. All other students move to their Crew room independently and we begin our sessions with an ‘ice breaker’ activity. During the last two Kalinda Crew sessions, we have been building our skills in meeting people through playing games such as ‘Ask and Pass,’ where the students have to ask a question, then pass it to their partner who then answers and asks another question. The aim of the game is to keeping asking questions until they find something in common.

Last week we spent time creating our Kalinda Crew names, mascots and slogans. This was a great time of brainstorming for the students as they shared what they wanted their crew to be known for. It is heart-warming to hear the students name what they value, such as kindness, sharing, caring for others, looking after our environment and being respectful of each other.

Each time we meet together the students become more confident with the children in their group. It has been lovely watching students greet each other in the playground as they pass by.

We are looking forward to our Kalinda Egg-cellent Easter Bonanza next Friday! The students will participate in a range of fun Easter activities with their crew. Keep a lookout on Compass for some more information soon!
