The Welcome Picnic - A New Look at CC

Dear Collingwood College (CC) families

After much deliberation we have finally decided on the new date and format of the Whole School Welcome Picnic.

With the recent Covid announcements we are so happy to be able to invite families to join us on…….THURSDAY, MARCH 11th from 3pm-4pm

at the Undercroft and Stadium Garden

The picnic will be a joint venture with the Thursday Market. The market will be relaunching on this date. Our wonderful VCAL students will be spearheading the new look market. They will be making and selling food alongside some of the original stall holders from our markets in 2019. It’s been a while since we've hosted a Thursday Market, we have dearly missed the atmosphere.

We anticipate a great turnout combining Thursday market and the WELCOME PICNIC!

More information will be available on Compass so look out for that.

We hope we see you all there!

Thanking the excellent students in the VCAL team for their organisation and enthusiasm. What an excellent way for CC to showcase this wonderful program.

2021 Collingwood College Swim Carnival

On Tuesday, 23rd February we held our annual Collingwood College Swimming Carnival at our local Fitzroy Open Air pool. The Melbourne weather put on a show (as usual !!) but despite a couple of light showers did not dampen the competitors’ spirits.

With the seating area at full capacity swimming events started at 10am, after a short walk from the college, with the Year 5/6 50m freestyle heats. There were six heats for this event alone! All students who entered the water throughout the day scored points for their House.

We had short breaks between the change overs of swim stroke but that didn’t mean a rest for the participants. We held House challenge competitions – Ping Pong ball and brick collections from the water.

As usual, our SRC students were on hand and run off their feet with BBQ and drinks duties. I was told this was because “athletes need to replace their calories after competition”???

We had a fierce battle for 1st and 2nd placing and 3rd and 4th placing which changed frequently.

Overall eventual winners of the 2021 Collingwood College Swimming Carnival were Blue Gum (Blue House) with 213 points.

1st Place – Blue Gum (Blue) House - 213 points

2nd Place – Banksia (Red) House - 161 points

3rd Place – Eucalyptus (Green) House - 137 points

4th Place – Wattle (Yellow) House – 118 points

Congratulations to Blue Gum for winning the 2021 Collingwood College Swim Carnival.

A big thank you to all participants and teachers for making our 2021 carnival another great event. Our next carnival is only five weeks away - The 2021 Athletics Carnival on Thursday, 1st April. A great way to finish Term 1.

On behalf of the Collingwood College HPE Team – thank you and see you soon.

Regards

International Women's Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day of action celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a call to action to accelerate women’s equality.

International Women’s Day originated more than 100 years ago when women in several countries marched to protest the conditions of women workers and women in general. In 1975, the United Nations formally adopted IWD as a day of celebration and activism around women’s issues such as Equal Pay, Reproductive Rights, Freedom from violence and Equal Representation in business and government.

Equal pay: Women in Australia earn 25% less than their male co-workers.

Reproductive rights: South Australia decriminalised abortion last year but it has yet to become law. Women need the opinion of two doctors, and an abortion would only proceed if the woman’s life was in danger or the child is likely to be handicapped.

Freedom from violence: In Australia, on average one woman is murdered each week by her current or former partner. Since they turned 15, one in three Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence perpetrated by a man. If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, family or domestic violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit www.1800RESPECT.org.au. In an emergency, call 000.

Equal representation in government and business: Women make-up only 35% of parliamentarians in the federal parliament. There are only 7 female Ministers out of 30 in our current Federal government. In business, women make up only 18% of CEOs and less than 30% of board members in Australian companies.

As you can see, IWD is just as important in 2021 as it was 100 years ago. At Collingwood College, we’d like to celebrate the day on Friday 5th March by wearing purple, green and white (or a combination). The colours come from the early Suffragette movement which campaigned for women’s right to vote. Purple represents dignity/justice; green represents growth/hope and white represents purity of purpose.

You can participate in IWD by nominating a woman whose achievements you’d like to celebrate. Write her name on the paper available in the front foyer and a brief statement on why she is important. These will be collected and displayed around the school.
