ETHICS OLYMPIAD

Rebecca Smitran, English Coordinator and IGNITE Leader

On Wednesday 26 May, two teams competed virtually in the Senior School Ethics Olympiad which was judged by esteemed experts in Ethics and Philosophy across the world.

I’m very proud to announce that one of our teams won the silver medal (second place). This is an amazing result for the team comprising of Ashwin, Konon, Cadence, Harmony and Georgia. This builds on the team’s prior success, achieving the Gold Medal in the State final of the Middle School Olympiad and the Silver Medal in the Australian Final earlier this year.

The Senior School Olympiad challenged these students further with case studies that tackled increasingly complex topics, such as:

  • Is it unethical to buy fast fashion clothing? What if those are the only brands that one can afford?
  • Are activists obligated to make their demands more palatable to the public in order to achieve their goals?
  • What ethical responses are available to media consumers when they deem a show to have committed an ethical breach? Is it ethical to enjoy an ethically-flawed show?

This team have now qualified for the International Final, which will be held on Friday 23 July. We wish them all the best for this competition and congratulate them on their success so far.
