Caring About Our Digital Footprint

On the eighth of March, the Year Sevens participated in an  digital workshop, run by Don from Optus. The aim of the workshop was to teach us that our information is valuable. It focused on three main components:

  • The strength of your password
  • Terms of service
  • Online business models

We had a chance to test out our passcodes, and see the estimated time it would take for a computer to crack it. The times ranged from 1.69 nanoseconds to 52 billion years!

We learnt that apps and websites, like YouTube and Facebook sell your information. What is shocking is that we give them full permission to, by ticking ‘yes’ in the terms and conditions. Companies purposely make the terms and conditions long and confusing, so that (unless you’re a lawyer) you can’t be bothered to read them. But don’t feel bad about not reading the T and Cs, not many people do. This website ‘ https://tosdr.org/’ helps to make thing simpler by explaining the Ts and Cs in easier words.

The workshop went for only  60 minutes but time flew and many students didn’t want it to end.

Over all we had an awesome experience and learnt a lot about being safe online and caring about our digital footprint.
