Principal's Report

Harmony Week Assembly the inclusive, diverse nature of our MGC students and families

Anyone who attended the annual Harmony Day assembly at Melbourne Girls’ College (MGC) on 22nd March would see the diversity and inclusion of a wide range of students in this magnificent school. Pictures tell a thousand words so please reflect upon the faces of our fantastic students as you browse through the website. They tell the true story.

Congratulations to our College Captains, Student Executive and students who lead, organised and performed throughout another excellent event.

Department of Education and Training (DET) Government Schools in Richmond and Prahran

MGC welcomes the building of two new high schools nearby. Under DET rules this means boundary changes to ensure that students are enrolled at their nearest government school. This document on our website outlines the Year 7 enrolment policy agreed with DET http://mgc.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/The-2018-Melbourne-Girls-Year-7-Enrolment-Policy.pdf

DET modelling indicates that even beyond 2020 all post code 3121 based girls will gain a place at the College as the MGC enrolment provision for 50% of the next closest girls shows this clear intent.

Congratulations Linley Ooi (Golf) and Tylah Spark (Netball), Victorian School Sports Awards

The Victorian School Sports Awards recognise excellence across all categories of major school sports. They are given to students who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport. Tylah Spark and Linley Ooi won Sporting Blue Awards for outstanding achievement in a sport conducted as part of the school sport program. It was wonderful to celebrate these achievements with Tylah and Linley’s parents.

Linley went on to win the highest accolade, The Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Achievement Award, in any sport by a Primary or Secondary School Student. It was a very emotional celebration with Linley’s parents full of pride as the award is for community service and social justice as well as sporting progress.

Head of School Girls (HOSG) Rowing Regatta

It was a privilege to be at the HOSG regatta last weekend where over 2,500 athletes competed. Steph Burgess, our wonderful Head Coach, deserved the success of 13 A Finals securing 3 gold medals, 4 silver and 2 bronze, results also placed us in 7 B Finals and 5 C finals. MGC Rowing coming fourth overall amongst many schools. The camaraderie with parents, staff, coaches and most importantly our rowing girls on the banks ensured a real sense of MGC - Lead and Achieve!

We are proud of our rowers, no matter where they place, as hard work and determination are part of training and competing well. Sincere thanks to our dedicated Rowing Committee President, Shelley Anderson; always kind and patient Treasurer, Ian Ferguson; of course Steph and incredible staff Fliss Burgess, Sarah Lerpiniere, Emily Miller, Sefija Demirova, Isabella Kontogeorgis, Trevor Howlett, Liam Brown, Amber Munro, Nancy Sandilands, Pat Sklavakis, Bridget Tellefson and Andrew Arney (who has already booked the caravan park for next year). Many superlatives but the commitment of so many people is important to the present and future of rowing at MGC.

Launching our Performing Arts Centre Fundraising Appeal

During our 22-year history, Melbourne Girls’ College has continued to offer outstanding opportunities for our students. In the spirit of our desire to offer students the opportunity to ‘Lead and Achieve’, we are excited to announce our appeal for assistance in the building of a modern and professional Performing Arts Centre.

As our Dance, Music and Drama programs continue to grow and flourish, the Instrumental teaching studios and rehearsal spaces are no longer able to accommodate the multitude of activities students can participate in.

Our Theatrette is now too small for our growing enrolments, with the space unable to accommodate an entire year level of students for assemblies and guest speakers.

In short, our current facilities no longer allows us to provide the best practice learning and teaching in the Performing Arts that our students deserve.

We have already saved $800,000 towards this goal, and although we are seeking government funding there is no guarantee we will be successful or be granted sufficient funds for this much-needed building project.

In the past we’ve been able to build marvellous new facilities with the help of our incredible parent community, so we once again ask for your generous assistance.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to our fundraising appeal you can do so via https://www.trybooking.com/OVWF or please contact me at any time if you would like more information.

Stay tuned for more news as we develop plans for this project.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Student and Parent Conferences with our teachers next Tuesday.

Regards,

Karen Money
