Student Book Reviews

Ashlee lives in a world that is almost destroyed by pollution, seismic adjustments and plague. Birds are blamed for the plague and everybody is terrified of them.

A controlling retrogressive group called the Citadel has taken over, and they believe that it is better that people are all of one thought as then there is no dissent. How wrong they are.  Ashlee who is a Cinderella character begins to doubt when she sees a bird nesting on some eggs near her home. When she is caught with the eggs by an ugly stepsister and labeled a witch she sets out into a world she didn’t know existed.

This is a world of resistance. A world where Eggheads (scientists) and conservationists plot the downfall of the citadel who are not only poisoning minds but the environment as well.

The action takes place in a location that is remarkably like Christchurch and Banks Peninsula and there is talk of a toppled cathedral. There is tension throughout the novel and the ending is action packed and ultimately hopeful. So, it should be. Good should always triumph over evil. The book also encourages children to take a step forward into a new world of adventure.

The Explorer is about 4 kids who get lost in the Amazon Jungle trying to get home after their plane crashed. It is mainly based on the character, Fred, but it’s written in third-person. They find an explorer who lives there and he helps them. There are twists and turns and the characters are very unique. Their backstories shine through as you read and it gets very intense at times. It also has a good sense of humour in the book, which can make the tough times seem a little less tough. Even though it is a bit of a kid’s book, it has a different sense of writing, which makes me want to read more books by this author. She has a good sense of humour and she manages to put a more “young adult” sense to a kid’s book, whilst still making it feel young. If you are into books like this, I would definitely read it, and even if you’re not, I would give it a try – just like I did – because you never know if you will actually enjoy it. I would give it a higher rating, but I’m more into young adult books than junior fiction. That’s just my taste, but considering the genre, I think it has done pretty well.
