Chaplain’s Spot

Find a mentor. Become a mentor.

Who has had a mentor? Mentors can give us wisdom and encouragement. They help us to grow to our potential. Some mentors are for a short season, others for a lifetime. How do you recognise a mentor? Here are eight ways:

(1) Mentors are willing to spend time to build a close relationship with the learner;

(2) They commit themselves to believing in their potential, opening them up to the exciting future they see ahead for them; explaining the possibilities for their life;

(3) They are willing to be vulnerable and transparent before them, willing to share not only their strengths and successes, but also their failures and brokenness;

(4) They are willing to be honest yet affirming in confronting them to re-examine their unproductive habits, faults, and areas of immaturity;

(5) They are committed to standing by them through any trials they may face;

(6) They are committed to helping set life goals, and to help them activate their dream;

(7) They are willing to help them objectively evaluate their progress toward their goal;

(8) Above all, they are committed to faithfully living out everything they teach.

Who can be a mentor? Parents and carers, older siblings or cousins, uncles or aunts, teachers, sports coaches and leisure activity leaders. Whoever is a positive, safe role model can be a mentor. Who are the best mentors for your children?
