Humans of Kilvington

This week's 'Humans of Kilvington' guest is Lucas Collins, our Head of Junior School. Thanks for sharing Lucas!

  1. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? A fighter jet pilot.
  2. What football team do you support (if any?) Collingwood!
  3. You can travel to any destination in the world, where would you go? Given the winter we’ve had,  probably the Maldives.
  4. Funniest/most memorable moment at Kilvington? Yard Duties in the Discovery Grove ... I learn something new, and invariably bizarre, from our lower primary students each time I’m out there!
  5. Share something about yourself that no one would ever guess. I cannot have the volume set to an odd number in my car or on the TV – it’s terribly unlucky.
  6. If you could swap your job with anyone else at Kilvington, who would it be? One of the members of our maintenance team. I envy anyone who is able to fix/build things that don’t come from IKEA.
  7. Your favourite thing about working at Kilvington? Our team – just the right blend of care, fun and commitment to ensure we enjoy coming to work and provide high-quality learning experiences for our students.

Nominations now open for the Judy Allen Award 2022

Each year at Celebration Night, a member of our School community is presented with the prestigious Judy Allen Award.

This award recognises and celebrates a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the School for over a 5-year period, or more, just like the passionate and dedicated Judy Allen who held a number of roles at Kilvington including student, parent, staff member and Board member.

The Award recipient receives a framed certificate and has their name included on the Honour Board in Dalton Hall.

Nominations for this Award open on 16 September 2022 and close on 30 October 2022. Please find the nomination criteria and form below.

VCE Exhibition - 10 October

Join us for the 2022 VCE Exhibition for Studio Arts, Media and Visual Communication Design on Monday 10 October at 6.00pm in the VCE Study Centre.

We are delighted to welcome back alumna Christa Hill, Class of 2016, as our guest speaker. Grace Kiosoglous' beautiful owl (pictured) is inspired by this year's exhibition theme, 'Taking Flight'.

Year 9 Walkathon

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

On Friday 9 September, our Year 9 students walked 17km from Kilvington to the city. One half of the student group went via the John Gardiner Creek Trial along the Yarra while the other half walked down North Road and along the foreshore. We were lucky to have perfect weather and a wonderful group of non-complaining teenagers.

The walk was a culmination of training walks for the students' upcoming expeditions. It also doubled as a fundraiser to raise money to cover the costs of materials and tools for their Cape York Immersion expedition.

Enough funds were raised for the projects and for a sizeable donation to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. People can still contribute via this link

Connor's Run

Jacqui Goldenberg, Community Service Program Director

WOW! Last Sunday, 70 Kilvington students (mainly from Year 10) and 11 staff members participated in Connor’s Run. The Run is part of the Community Service Program and was also the culmination of the Year 10’s Fitness Unit in PE.

The run is more 'fun than run' so there was much goodwill, laughter, encouragement, smiles and high fives all around on the day. At last glance, Kilvington was still on top of the Schools’ Fundraising Leader board.

Connor’s Run supports the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation’s Brain Matters projects, with the goal of changing the odds for children facing brain cancer. It is not too late to donate here

A special thanks to the 10 members of the Kilvington volunteer crew who were up from 7.00am. These events are only possible with the goodwill of volunteers, and it was great to see so many Kilvington students from Years 9, 11 and 12 put their hands up to help.

This month on SchoolTV - ‘Online Gaming’

Games are an integral part of human behaviour. It is normal and healthy for young people to engage in play as a part of their daily lives, including playing games online.

The World Health Organisation does believe that as well as the risks, there are also many positive benefits associated with online gaming and these could be key in nurturing bonds with others.

During the pandemic, there was an explosive growth of gaming as people sought much needed connection during isolation. In the media, gaming often gets bad publicity because most coverage tends to concentrate on the minority of gamers who play to such an extent that it compromises all other areas of their life.

However, online gaming can teach young people many skills including teamwork, concentration, communication and problem-solving. It requires a level of interaction and skill from the player; unlike watching television, which is more passive.

However, if you are concerned about your young person’s online gaming habits, it’s important to consider a number of factors. This edition will provide strategies in how to deal with any issues you may be experiencing.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the School for further information or seek medical or professional help.
