National Science Week 2022

Carolyn McLean

This year’s theme for National Science Week is ‘Glass: More than meets the Eye’. HCC celebrated with lunchtime activities run by VCE Science teachers and students: Monday was Chemistry, Wednesday was Biology, Thursday was Psychology and Friday was Physics. There were no activities on Tuesday due to the VCE Rally Day.

The Education Perfect Science Championships started at 4:00pm on Monday 15/8. Year 7-10 students have been encouraged to enter and win as many points as possible for themselves and the school. The top ten students at HCC will receive a certificate, the top five will receive a box of chocolates and the top three will also win gift cards which are $30 for the first prize, $20 for the second, and $10 for the third.

HCC also held its own competition where students wrote the main ingredient for making glass on a piece of paper and posted their entries in the competition box. The first 3 correct entries drawn at assembly won one of three glass drink bottles. Congratulations to Geith Pakwan, Kyle Baillie and Joseph Solomonsz.

Year 7-10 Science classes focused on the glass theme with discussions on what is glass, its applications, glass sustainability and the environment, and glass in the future.

There were also experiments based on the glass theme and videos on the United Nations International Year of Glass, ‘The Glass Age’ and a glass harp performance.

To finish the week, students may watch the movie ‘Alice through the looking Glass’ at home this weekend; the ClickView link will be in Compass Newsfeed later today.

Thank you to all the students who participated in and/or volunteered to help with, the activities during the week. Don’t forget that the Education Perfect Science Championships will end on Monday 22/8 at 4:00pm.
