Curriculum

What a week! Book Week! Throughout the week we read some incredibly beautiful books that have been made finalists for the book of the year by The Children’s Book Council of Australia. In Reading students have been practising retelling the important events in a story to help them develop their understanding of books read. Elements such as the beginning, middle and end of a story, as well as, the problems and solution. Students retold events from stories such as ‘When the Waterhole Dries Up’, ‘Walk of the Whales’ and ‘Jetty Jumping’. Throughout the week students were also engaged in different crafts that were based around these texts. Students loved using their creativity when painting, colouring and collaging when bringing these pieces to life.

In Maths, our main focus this week has been on subtraction. Students have been exploring different types of strategies they can use to help them solve subtraction problems. Some of these strategies include acting out a problem using materials such as counters and bundles of icy pole sticks, drawing a picture and counting back on a number line. Throughout the week we also used the incredible Book Week texts as prompts for our Maths problems. We had multiple open ended problems that linked to our stories. This proved to be very engaging and allowed students to challenge themselves to find multiple answers or use a range of strategies to a single problem.

In Writing, students continued with their focus on writing Narratives. This week students were very excited to create their own story. Over the past few weeks, students had been exposed to the different elements of a story and had been practising through adapting known texts. This week they were able to put all of their knowledge of narratives into practise when they wrote a story about their very own creature. Students focused on introducing a character and setting in the beginning of a story. Including a problem in the middle of their story and finding a solution at the end of their story. They challenged themselves to make their writing entertaining by including interesting words or extra details and made sure their stories made sense by rereading their work and making any edits needed.

Foundation were very excited on Wednesday morning to meet with their buddies and read their finished stories. We are focusing on writing to entertain, so were practising entertaining our audience- our buddies! Once we had entertained our buddies with our stores, we listened to one of the Book Week stories and then used teamwork and creativity with our buddies to complete a craft activity.

Finally last week we had our visit from Life Education and their very special guest, Healthy Harold! We played a range of interactive games to learn about being a good friend and set our own independent goals to work towards as we become even better friends!
