MCRI Research Study on Irritability on Young Children

What is the research project about?

This study aims to see whether an irritability treatment program is helpful to families in reducing child irritability, as well as improving child and family functioning. The intervention we will be using to treat irritability is ‘Collaborative & Proactive Solutions’. This is an intervention that has been used widely by clinicians in the community but we do not know if it is effective in reducing irritability.

What does it involve?

It involves, over the course of 8 sessions, teaching children and parents to identify unsolved problems that contribute to irritability, how to prioritise which areas to tackle first, and what children and parents can do together to lessen irritability. We hope about 160 children and their families will participate in this project.

Who is running the project? T

The project is being run through the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute located at the Royal Children’s Hospital Campus in Melbourne, Australia. The study team is comprised of members of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute Neurodisability and Rehabilitation team. This project is funded by the Royal Children’s Hospital campus mental health strategy.

No Problem is Too Big or Too Small

Not only is Kids Help Line a 24 hour support helpline, it also has important information on common issues that many children face. Topics such as making friends, feeling sad, why sleep is important and grief. The stories offered may provide your child with advice, strategies or a reassurance that what they are experiencing may be a common challenge and they are not alone.

What Youth Want Survey

Hobsons Bay City Council’s What Youth Want campaign aims to learn more about young people in our community, from young people themselves. We want to understand what’s important to them and what would make Hobsons Bay a better place to live.

All young people aged 10-25 years are encouraged to get involved, by completing a short anonymous survey for a chance to win one of 2 x $250 vouchers (major prizes) and one of 5 x $100 vouchers (minor prizes) from a range of youth-friendly outlets. Survey is open until 30 Sept.

Information gathered through the What Youth Want campaign will provide valuable information to help plan programs and services for young people in the community. Once the campaign is finalised, the information collected will be shared back with young people and the community through online channels and face to face events.
