To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of GNLC, our festivities were marked with a whole Junior Years Assembly in the gym, where hundreds of chairs were set up for all the students to sit on. This made the students feel very important and included. Upon returning to the classroom after the assembly, many of the 4AS students were in awe to have been part of this celebration, to have heard about the history of the beginnings of the school, some for the first time and wanted to share their reflections.
One student made a connection to his House, Hume, because he learnt that the attributes of Hume were cheeriness and determination – characteristics which resonated with the student, therefore he had a sense of belonging not only to the College but to the House as well. Another student had a similar connection to Baker House. A student from Hume, who did not consider themselves sporty at all, felt encouraged to give things a go after hearing more about his House at the assembly. Listening to the history and learning about the beginnings of the College, made one student feel calm and serene and pleased that he was part of a great school.
There was a feeling of immense pride in the growth of the College, starting from just 27 students to over 1,000 today. There was plenty of excitement about the prospect of receiving the history book of the college, as well as the commemorative pin and house bag tag. The theme of community and togetherness was very strong throughout the assembly, which confirmed to the students in 4AS that this is where they belonged. They all felt a sense of pride for the college and were humbled and grateful to be a part of the celebrations.
