Our Place

On Thursday 11th August, Year 3s spent a day with our amazing Clayfield College Old Collegians. We participated in a special History Incursion where we learned about

'My Place - Our Place - Clayfield College'.

Our focus was on understanding how things had changed over time at the College in a number of different areas including the uniforms, sports, boarding, transport, community services, school experience, food, playtime and ... discipline! We can now imagine a time of old school bells, little milk bottles at morning tea and writing on slates … and perhaps getting the cane if you were very naughty!

We loved the fashion parade and living timeline of uniforms, presented by Year 5 and Mrs McFarlane. The olde school room was fabulous, featuring changes in school equipment and other technologies. Another interesting rotation explained how the house system formed and our badges were designed. We learned that the laurel leaves on our badge symbolise hard work, trying our best and celebrating achievement.

The wonderful Old Collegian Panel gave us a fascinating insight into their experiences and the opportunity to ask plenty of questions. They really brought history to life for us! How lucky we are to have such a dedicated, interesting and generous group of Old Collegians at Clayfield.

We would like to give enormous thanks to Deidre Brandon, Linda Waldock, Annette Fifoot, Meg Graham, Stephanie Felsman, Adrian Slaughter, Trudi Woodhouse and Caroline Thurlow.

Science Week

Science Week started with a bang, a flame and a whole lot of dry ice for our primary school students! They were enthralled from start to finish, and some of them are still talking about it! The presentation by Street Science engaged our students of all ages in science, through fun, meaningful experiments and real-world experiences. Please check out the Street Science website https://www.streetscience.com.au for other fun-filled experiments that can be set up at home.

Combined Music Festival

On Tuesday 16 August we hosted the annual Combined Junior School Music Festival, including 200 students from Clayfield College, Brisbane Boys’ College and Somerville House. Music and laughter filled the College and students enjoyed collaborating in workshops and spending time together on the oval and playgrounds during their break-times. At the close of the day, students from each ensemble, Strings, Band and Choir were able to showcase their work from the day in a mini concert, to which the remaining students in Years 3-6 were invited. It was a wonderful demonstration of what can be achieved by dedicated staff and eager, talented young musicians.

It is that time of year again – Father’s Day is fast approaching! Our Friends of Primary Father’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday 1st September

We have a huge selection of fabulous gifts for the students to choose from! We are sure they will find something perfect for their dads, grandads, uncles, carers and loved ones at the stall. There are gifts for green thumbs and dog lovers, BBQ bosses and camping enthusiasts, sudoku smarties and sports-mad Dads. We’ve got caps, ties, stationery and bath packs – and everything in between!

Gifts are priced at $5, $10 and $15 and all funds raised will go towards the Friends of Primary and P&F initiatives. Primary Students will be taken to the Stall during the day by their teachers and will have their teachers and parent volunteers to help them with their shopping.

Students are to bring shopping money to school in a named envelope which will be collected by their class teacher at the start of the day. They will be handed back to the student when attending the Stall and any change will be returned for safekeeping. Children will take their change and gifts home at the end of the day.
