Baking and Birthdays in Breaksea

The last three weeks have focused on birthdays and baking in Breaksea. I’ve always asked the girls what type of cake they would like for their birthdays, with the favourite normally being an ice-cream cake. However, this month we celebrated seven birthdays over nine days. This meant more creativity was needed and the girls came up with amazing ideas.

The first two birthday cakes were for Nat Heron and Tiffany Butterworth and they had wanted a Bingo from the TV series Bluey and a netball as their cakes. The challenge was given to the girls and an incredible ice-cream Bluey cake and a hand-painted netball cake emerged. Then the girls discovered fondant!

Breaksea now has quite a few cake decorating tools and many budding cake designers. The fairy garden cake for Wayhapo and India had about fifteen girls working on it at one stage, with a variety of different designs added. The cake was so impressive that the birthday candles were placed in the tubs of ice-cream instead of the cake. Olivia Williss has excelled in cake decorating and leading the students in the wonder of fondant.

The next birthday was Rhiannon’s beach themed cake. Rhiannon was actually involved in the creation of the cake, making the sand and ocean scene. Finally, we celebrated two adults! Lahnee Reid-Harries turned eighteen and Miss Zaria Church, one of our supervisors, also had a birthday. There was a penguin cake with icebergs and chubby penguins and then a solar system cake, including an alien with a muscular six-pack.

We have two more special birthdays to celebrate which we will do over the coming weekend.  A big happy birthday to Chelsea Evans and Tyla Climie.

Between all the birthdays, other girls have mastered the skill of making bliss balls and many an impressive cupcake has been made. Another skill the students are valuing is mindful colouring in. There are mindful colouring books in the staff office and textas and there is rarely a time you won't find a student sitting in the office colouring in or colouring in whilst chatting with others. It has been wonderful to witness the way in which learning and sharing a skill can create connections and joy. We love to continue extending the students in Breaksea and if any parents or friends of boarding, have a great skills they would like to share with our students, please contact Ms Vanessa Bromhead.

Upcoming Events

There is a lot of excitement and tired muscles in Breaksea this week, with the final practices before the students leave for Country Week on Sunday. There are ten students from Breaksea making their way up to Perth to represent Great Southern Grammar in either Netball, Hockey or Soccer. We wish them all the best for this adventure.

Congratulations also to Zaydee Kiagoes, Madison Smart and Ava Smith who are representing Great Southern Grammar performing in Radio Active at the Albany Entertainment Centre this Friday night.
