Eclipse House News

I hope all Eclipse families enjoyed the Boarders' Closed Weekend and valuable time spent with your son. It is pleasing to hear of the many stories and adventures. As we move into the second half of Term Three, I wish all those boys attending Country Week the greatest of success and enjoyment. It is a wonderful opportunity to test their skills amongst others.

I would like to introduce you to Dr Carol Dweck. She is an American psychologist and the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. She is also the author of the best-selling book Mindset. I highly recommend reading her book as it outlines many important topics that aim to guide not only adolescence but adults into changing the way you think to fulfill your potential.

Dr Carol Dweck introduces the idea that we approach many situations with either a ‘fixed mindset’ or a ‘growth mindset’. It is a linear representation of our own self talk when it comes to failure and success. Below is a comparison between the two, and the self-talk that goes with it. I encourage all to lean into the growth mindset to be the best version of themselves.

Here are few excerpts from Mindset. Within Eclipse currently, there is a great deal of effort being directed across many personal pursuits. Our aim for the remainder of Term Three is to direct the utmost energy to growth through our house values of gratitude and honesty.

  • “Skills and achievement come through commitment and effort.”
  • “When you enter a mindset, you enter a new world. In one world – the world of fixed traits- success is about proving you are smart or talented. Validating yourself. In the other- the world of changing qualities- it is about stretching yourself to learn something new. Developing yourself.”
  • “No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment.”

Recreation

Pierce Newman and Mr Sam Forward are continuing their great work with leading the recreation in Eclipse. As we move into a new season and warmer weather, our adventures will follow. Please keep a look out for a permission form that I will ask you to fill out. Within this form is a list of beaches and activities that we wish to explore. Each beach has the necessary risk assessment form filled and qualified staff members present. The young men in Eclipse love getting outdoors and we aim to build on this to create great memories in boarding.

Notable recent recreation enjoyed includes, fire and fishing on the point, surfing, Nanarup beach walks and inlet watching, shopping trips, skate park cruises, lookout adventures and whale watching.

Leadership

I congratulate Darcy Barrett on his great work so far as Boarding Vice-Captain. We now transition into the next appointment. Hamish Medway will now undertake the important role. He is very much looking forward to leading positively in the boarding community. Plenty of ideas have already been put forward. I am eager to work with the large group of leaders in Eclipse to build greater connection and enjoyment throughout the boarding community.

I also welcome Daniel Fisher into the role of Chief of Eclipse Community Operations. The CECO is in control of integrating the Eclipse boarders into the school community and Albany community. He will work to organise weekly, fortnightly, and monthly events that will generate connection between other boarders, staff members and local community members. The CECO will also work in conjunction with the Head of House to welcome guest speakers into Eclipse and Anchorage. He has already organised an "old boy" from the class of 2021, Mr Jacob Voss to speak to the boys about life after school, ATAR, recreational pilots license and job opportunities. We look forward to welcoming him on Wednesday 7 September for dinner.

Birthdays

A very happy to Marcus Leckie who recently turned 16.
