Transition and Pathways

Country University Centre (CUC), Griffith

Located at 2/1 Olympic St Griffith, inside the new Community Centre, the CUC offers a place where post-school students can be supported in their studies. As part of the Eastern Australia Regional University Centre program, it is focused on nurturing the study aspirations of young people in regional communities and assisting in the pursuit of post-secondary further education. The project is a collaboration of 25 universities and 16 Regional University Centres with the aim to develop a coordinated, community-led approach to school outreach.Unfortunately, nationwide tertiary completion rates are not great."Over the last few years many more students have chosen a university pathway after leavingschool. However, 4-year completion rates for domestic university students are only 42%meaning that more than half of students drop out and try something else. Students withATARs of less than 65 are more than twice as likely to drop out compared to those with anATAR above 75.In the last year apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities have risen sharply, with over100,000 apprenticeships being taken up by school leavers in 2021. Here, too, completionlevels are an issue with only 56% of apprentices and trainees completing their AustralianApprenticeship with their first employer."

Working to address this, on Thursday 8th September, I’ll be participating in a focus group at the CUC which aims to develop ideas on how best to address the community challenges in the pursuit of higher education. In good news, Griffith saw a 37% rise in engagement with University study from last census. This has been attributed to the Centre being open, which is a great result.
