Schools In Sync

On the 22nd of August, MAD Dance participated in a dance competition called ‘Schools In Sync’. Schools in Sync is a competition Victorian schools to participate in and compete against each other. We entered the Junior Lyrical category with a recreation of our dance ‘Thank You for the Music’ and placed first. We also had a number of students compete in the solo sections, which was an amazing opportunity for them. After all the performances we also had an opportunity to participate in four workshops ran by professional dance teachers. This included two jazz workshops, hip hop and lyrical. These workshops were such an amazing experience for us to not only learn new dances, but to have fun and enjoy dancing. Overall the day was a big success and was very enjoyable and fun for all of us.

Wakakirri

On Monday the 22nd of July the MAD Dance Academy performed at Wakakirri, held at the Moonee Ponds Clocktower Centre. Wakakirri is a national dance competition for schools where each school aims to tell a story through dance. We were overjoyed to receive awards for Best Teamwork, Most Creative Use of Signature Item and Best Reuse of Costumes. We then had to wait for over a month to find out if we had received a story award and made it through to the next round.

Fortunately we won a story award for ‘Most Inspirational Story’ and therefore performed again, but this time at the Palais Theatre on the 11th of September.

Our story was about a family who was new to a town. After being welcomed to the area the family received a call alerting them of a bushfire heading towards the town. The family frantically packed their things and left in a hurry. The bushfire attacked the area and the family came back to find their house in ruins. The true message of our story was about how the community helped the family rebuild after such a tragedy.

After the performance we were welcomed back onto the stage where we received an award for The Most Creative Reuse of Materials for Set and Props. We are all very proud of our efforts and we can’t wait to complete again soon. Make sure to keep voting for our dance on the link below so we can share our story again through the People’s Choice Award.
