Deaf Awareness Week

This term at The Lakes we highlighted Deaf awareness week. We highlight this week as part of the National Week of Deaf People (NWDP). It is a weeklong national celebration of Deaf individuals and the Deaf Australian community.

During the week students engaged in Auslan activities in their classes. The year 3 and 4 students enjoyed a presentation by Geoff Rowling who discussed deafness and the deaf community.

The year 1 students practised learning their numbers using Auslan signs. They spent a whole lesson only being able to communicate using Auslan. They used Auslan signing to find a partner and play a maths game. Students learnt the numbers 1-30 in Auslan and then played ‘guess my number’ with a partner.

Students used the signs for ‘higher’, ‘lower’, ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to help their partner guess their number.

The Early Years Auslan club also performed a version of Old McDonald using Auslan signing at the Early Years assembly.
