Primary Sport

This term has seen our Year 4, 5 and 6 students participate in a variety of sport. Our students were involved in the Bridge Inn South District basketball competition. They competed really well and were exemplary in their attitude on the day. We also had numerous students compete in the Bridge Inn South District Athletics competition. It was a fantastic day, with Armani, Adele, Levi, Tristin, Abbey, Ava, Cooper and Ajang progressing to the divisional level.

At divisional athletics, all of our students did fantastic in their competition; many placing in their heats but unfortunately missing out on progress. Congratulations to all involved, especially Abbey and Levi for finishing 2nd in their events.

It was also a very special term for Phoenix S, who represented our state in the Under 12s Basketball competition in Bendigo. Phoenix had a fantastic tournament where the team finished runners up. There are hundreds of students who try out every year, and we are very proud of Phoenix for making the team.

Congratulations to Phoenix for this amazing achievement and all of our Lakes Legends who represented our school throughout this term.

Secondary Sport

Term 3 saw a number of teams compete in Interschool competitions against other schools in the Whittlesea Division.

In Basketball, the Year 7 Boys team played well against strong competition, narrowly missing the Grand Final. Eventually defeating Hazelglen to finish in 3rd place.

Both Year 9 Boys and Girls teams were competitive and showed great determination against opposition comprised of year 9 and 10 students. Both teams won matches within their groups but were unable to progress to finals.

The year 8 Basketball teams showed great teamwork during their competition. Both the Boys and Girls teams eventually winning their 3rd place finals.

Congratulations to all the students involved in Basketball this term and a huge thank you to the staff members who gave their time to coach these teams.

At the Northern Metropolitan Region Athletics event held at Meadowglen Athletics track, Chloe T (year 8) represented The Lakes in the u/14 Girls 100m and 200m Sprint races.

Running against some fantastic young athletes, Chloe took 2nd place in the 100m and 3rd place in the 200m event.

Well done Chloe!

Finally, our year 8 Boys and Girls Soccer teams competed against Mernda Central in the inaugural Whittlesea Community School’s Bunjil Shield.

This competition was created by members of the HPE and leadership teams and hopes to develop a sense of community, pride and common purpose amongst pupils, to foster friendly rivalries between local schools and to give our young people the opportunity to develop social networks with other students in the Whittlesea area.

The girls got off to a strong start, showing control and teamwork and were rewarded for their patience with a goal just before the break. Unfortunately, the team conceded two goals late in the second half and were unable to bridge the gap, ultimately losing a very hard-fought game 2-1.

Similarly, the Boys got off to a great start, scoring a number of goals in quick succession and went into the break with a comfortable lead. The second half went much like the first, our boys peppering the Mernda Central goal with great success. The team put on an impressive display, outclassing their opponents; comfortably winning 6-1.

A big thanks to Jose for coaching our soccer teams and a huge congratulations to all the students involved.
