FROM THE RUGBY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

St Pius X Rugby “Hot” at A Grade Level

Our annual trial against St Aloysius produced some wonderful rugby in hot conditions with the 16As, 15As, 14As and 13As all recording fine wins against well organised opponents. At B level we had narrow competitive losses in games that could have been won. Our opens will need to re-group and train hard, and specifically before the Cranbrook challenge on 5th May 5th.

The first trial always affords players and coaches the opportunity to plan and prepare with more certainty future sessions.

  • Players can ask, “How can I develop my game?”
  • Coaches can ask, “What can I do to improve team performance?”

The immediate challenge can be asked by our 15s who embark on a tour to NZ this week.  For our remaining players there is the opportunity to look at specific areas to improve at our two day coaching clinic on 23rd/24th April.

ISA Tennis

Our grading sessions continue this week on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Just a reminder that all students must attend training every week, despite other events that may be on earlier in the day. Our first round of competition begins on the first Saturday of next term. Draw details will be released and distributed as soon as arrangements are finalised.

SPX Tennis Championships

We were blessed with a beautiful morning for our SPX Tennis Championships this year.  Students from Year 7 through to Year 12 participated eagerly in our knock-out tournament and this bodes very well for our upcoming winter ISA season of tennis.  The positive buzz leading up to this event and the enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown on the day is a credit to all players.

Junior Division (Years 7, 8, and 9): This division saw some impressive gameplay with some nail-bitingly close games.  Ultimately, Victor Lahoud in Year 9 was the very deserving champion. Second place was nabbed by Xavier O’Carroll  who also brought exciting gameplay and some hard-fought wins on the day.  Victor and Xavier are certainly players to watch on the SPX Tennis circuit in upcoming years.

Senior Division (Years 10, 11 and 12):  Our experienced players were definitely a sight to see on the day. Their impressive skill, energy and determination brought us some sensational rallies. Overall, Year 10’s Riad Lahoud came out on top after a close game against Year 11’s Declan Langreiter.  They are undoubtedly an inspiration for our younger players in terms of their sportsmanship, skill, camaraderie and enthusiasm.

Honourable mentions also go to Joshua Jones, Anton Langreiter, Daniel Scipioni and Ben Casey, who all played well in their sets but narrowly missed out on making it through to the Final tournament rounds.

A final thank you to Ms Black and Ms Colefax, as well as all the players and their parents for their support on the day. Without your generosity and cooperation I’m sure that days like these would have not be so enjoyable for all involved.
