What's Been Happening?

Principal's Report

Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating 50 years of education at our current school site.  It was great to have the students involved and to have so many positive comments regarding how we acknowledged this milestone.  It was particularly pleasing for me to take a group of teachers who were amongst the school’s first staff through the current grounds.  Hearing their stories of the time and acknowledging how far the school has come in terms of educational outcomes and grounds was heartening and a reflection of all the work done by staff and community over those 50 years.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Year 12 student Ellee White in being selected for London International Youth Science Forum.  This is a great acknowledgement of her fantastic work in her science studies.  Experience tells us that this is an incredibly prestigous and worthwhile experience for any young person looking at a science based career path.  I would also like to thank Cowra Rotary for their organisation in helping Ellee access a scholarship to aid in the financial requirements.

You would be aware that Anzac Day this year will fall at the end of the school holidays.  This is a significant day on our nation’s calendar for very good reason.  I ask that if you are in Cowra on Anzac day that you encourage your child to please join us at the march and show our respect to those who have sacrificed so much.

It’s with mixed emotions that I inform you that I have been selected to lead a team to work with schools across rural NSW to enhance teacher performance.  This is a great honour and a professional challenge I look forward to meeting.  However, it does mean that I will not be able to meet this challenge and provide Cowra High with the time required to be an effective Principal.  As such, for the period of this deployment Cowra High will have a relieving principal. The Department will be undertaking a rigorous process to select the relieving principal over the next week or so and I am confident as a result, he or she will further enhance our great school.  This is not an end to my connection with Cowra High, simply a short recess.

Have a wonderful holiday.

Cowra High's First Staff share their thoughts....

Dear Charles,

Thank you for the visit to CHS on Friday morning. Much appreciated. The school had a very positive feel.

Here are a few words from the others:

*  “A big thank you to the principal for his generosity and time taken to show us around the school.  What a beautiful spot and such a peaceful feel to to the school.  Best wishes to Charles and the staff.”

Lydia Hanrahan (Miss Krawczenko) - Languages and English.

*  “The highlights for me were to see how the school amenities and facilities have greatly improved and enhanced catering for a much broader and diverse curriculum, especially the support unit area, the new art rooms and new multipurpose hall.

The friendliness and welcoming attitude of both staff and students we encountered and met during our tour of the school......

Our wonderful coffees prepared by TAS students....

The cockatoos, the trees and breeze, the clean air, the vast space and the beautifully undulating countryside that surrounded.  I feel these contributed to the quietness and peacefulness which surrounded the school in stark contrast to the city schools.

The diligent involvement and performance of the students we witnessed in their lessons....

A thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane. Thanks, Charles for the guided tour.”

Eva Prochazka - Art teacher

*  “ Cowra High had a really positive feel about it.  Any kids we spoke to seemed happy and felt they enjoyed being there.  The school seemed so spacious with a real teacher/student friendliness.  Such a beautiful setting amongst the surrounding rolling hills.

Was really impressed with the variety of subjects offered especially being a relatively small school....use of today’s technology....online etc ?

Can you recite Pi to 100 decimal places?

Zara Petty recently successfully recited Pi to 100 decimal places in front of her class and Mr Howard.  She is pictured with her "proof",  the signed piece of paper showing that Mr Howard witnesses her amazing feat.
