Year 7 Maths - Kahoots
During the last week of Term 2, the 5.1 Year 7 classes combined to complete a unit of work on fractions, decimals and percentages. Each student used a laptop to take part in an interactive multiple choice quiz called Kahoot. The sets of questions were compiled by Elka Johnstone and Mary Bullock and were run on the IWB at the front of the room. Students registered to participate in the quiz via the website Kahoot.it. Each question would appear and four alternative answers were presented. The students would then select their answer on their laptops and the responses would be automatically recorded. Students gained points for accuracy and speed. A certain amount of time was allowed for each question, usually 20 or 30 seconds, but the students were so keen to get their answers in that many were fully completed in under 10 seconds. The atmosphere in the room became very electric as students competed for the top spot. They all tried extremely hard and a resounding cheer went up after each answer was revealed.
The first lesson was used to introduce students to the website and the format of the quizzes. During the next lesson, the students were given worksheets and worked in groups to create their own multiple choice questions. Most students had little difficulty making up some questions but found it quite challenging to come up with not just the correct answer, but also three alternative incorrect answers that were related to the question. These were sorted and collated into Kahoot quizzes for the following lesson. Afterwards their teachers were able to save the Kahoot quiz results to form part of the student assessment.
Mr Gauci, Mr Bullock and Mr Pattingale were invited to watch the students play the Kahoot quizzes and of course Mr Pattingale couldn’t just watch - he had to join in! They were very impressed with the student engagement and how much fun they were having whilst doing Maths!
Expect more Kahoots in the future!
