Mission & Identity

I have spoken previously about the cycles of our college community. Another cycle begins this week with the launch of our Christmas Giving Tree and our Hamper collection. I am always amazed at the generosity of our community in giving to the many families who find financial difficulties, particularly during the Christmas season. Thank you to Year 7 and Year 9 who will be leading these initiatives across the College. Gifts for the Giving Tree are to be labelled with girl or boy and age to assist with the distribution of gifts. In choosing items for the Hamper collection, please give some thought to what your family might like to have on their Christmas day table.

This week 25 students and 7 staff attended a workshop for their upcoming immersions. It was obvious that these men will represent our College with commitment and dignity in the various communities they will visit.

The 2017 Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Servers also attended workshops in preparation for these very significant roles within our college and their parishes. Thank you to Mr Adrian Brannan, Mrs Deb Cummins and Father Paul Finucane for their assistance in running the workshops. These students will be commissioned at the Closing Mass on Wednesday the 6th of December at 10.00am.

Mass will be held at the Christian Brothers Chapel at 8.00am next Tuesday 21st November. This Mass will be celebrated for all of the names of deceased family and friends of the St Pius X College community that appear in our November Remembrance Book. Special devotion will be made to the repose of the soul of Mr Craig Naismith, father of Louis in Year 5.

Social Justice

The Edmund Rice Society had Mr Couani as a guest speaker this week who talked to the members about his trip to Edmund Rice schools in South Africa. Mr Couani spoke about the Edmund Rice Justice Desk, an organisation established in South Africa with its mission ‘To advocate, educate and equip in the area of Human Rights, Justice and Advocacy for all.’    https://www.justicedesk.org/

As we approach the end of the year please remember that the Year 9 Christmas Food Hamper Collection has begun. Students from Year 9 will be coming around to homerooms collecting Christmas type foods to be distributed to the less fortunate in our local community.

I was contacted by a Year 10 parent with a special request and have agreed that our St Pius community can assist some of the poorest villages in The Philippines without spending anything, but recycling our good quality items. There is a container being shipped to The Philippines late December and we have been asked to add our good condition used items of shoes (especially children’s size), light clothing and coloured pencils, sharpeners, rubbers etc. so if your children have grown out of excellent condition clothing or shoes please consider having your son bring them in to be donated to our less fortunate neighbours. There is a collection bin in the foyer this week and next.
