School Captains Report

Secondary School Captains

Hello and welcome to the first fortnightly School Captains Report in the newsletter!

Here we will be talking all things leadership and a little bit about what is going on around the school.

This year there are five school captains mixed from Years Nine and Ten. In our first report, we are going to introduce ourselves and our individual goals as leaders. Here is a little bit about us:

Jessica C., Year 9

Hello, my name is Jessica, and I am one of the school captains for The Lakes South Morang College. I applied to be school captain to improve my leadership skills as well as public speaking. I have had previous leadership skills as I got the chance to be a SRC representative twice. I do many things outside of school including help create and run a special needs basketball program, stage school and many more hobbies. I strive to make the school a fun and enjoyable place where students have their voices heard. I hope the skills I learn throughout the year help me in the future as well as help The Lakes become a better place.

Louise K., Year 9

Hi, my name is Louise and I am one of The Lakes College captains of 2020. I applied for school captain because I feel as though I can help the school and the community improve every day. I strive to be the best leader and role model I can to the people in my school and around me. Something I enjoy doing in my spare time is dance and studying the terminology of it. Dance is a passion I have had ever since I was around three years old and I hope to move forward with it in the future. I hope I can improve The Lakes and the community around me this year.

Caleb V., Year 9

Hello my name is Caleb, I am one of the school captains. I applied for the school captain role because I really want to make a difference and being school captain gives me the perfect platform to influence and inspire my peers. Outside of school I spend a lot of my time playing sport, I attend our local church every Sunday and I also help out with community fundraisers. This year I seek to help this school even more to become better than it already is and to make our college an even more exciting environment.

Angelina D., Year 9

Hello my name is Angelina and I am one of the school captains for 2020. I applied for school captain because I want to learn and develop my leadership skills that will apply in everyday life and to help the school improve while going through this new change. I have done leadership roles in the past and really enjoyed them, and they helped me with my confidence in public speaking. I love anything to do with either performing arts or visual arts because I can express myself in a way that I enjoy. I also love sports and have coached a basketball team in school before and I am currently assistant director for this year's production. I’d like to improve my work ethic and problem solving skills, while working hard to help my peers develop. I’m looking forward to the new exciting things the other captains and I get to experience this year

Angela R., Year 10

Hello, my name is Angela and I wanted to become School Captain as it is a great leadership opportunity that allows me to represent my peers at the highest level. My previous experience includes Early Years and Middle Years School Captain, SRC and School Council member. In terms of hobbies and interests, I like to get involved in the arts, meaning dancing and acting both inside and outside of the school. As School Captain this year, I will strive to create a positive and comfortable environment for my peers. I also hope to use my experience to mentor the other captains so that they make the most of their captaincy and learn as much as I have.

Fortnightly Report:

These first few weeks have gone very smoothly on the senior campus with all students settling in well to the new changes and set up of the school. As school captains, our leadership journey kicked off quickly with the selling of icy poles on the first Friday of the school year. It was a very hot first week and the cold refreshments were certainly popular amongst the students.

We then had our first meeting on the following Tuesday of the second week. We spoke about our goals for the year and what we wanted to achieve as school captains including participating in school tours, creating this fortnightly report and helping control rubbish on our school grounds.

Another exciting thing for us this week was school photos. As captains, we helped to coordinate the students to ensure photo day ran smoothly. We received positive feedback from all staff and students for our contribution on that day.

This week, we also spoke at our first school council meeting of the year and presented our above-mentioned speeches to the council members. Watching the schools leadership group work together has inspired us, as captains, to strive to be better leaders.
