Year 1 News...
We are now getting towards the middle of Term 3 and we have many exciting events coming up. In inquiry we have learnt about the different types of features including managed, natural and constructed. Year 1 students are working toward creating a box suburb of Ormond. The aim of this is to discuss the places of need within their local community and work as a team to create a class suburb. They are currently being displayed in the level 1 hallway. On 17th August we will take a short walk down main street of Ormond spotting some of the features within our community. We will also soon be going on an excursion to the Seaford Wetlands Education Centre, notices are out this week and due 15th August. We will need a parent per class for both outings. If you are available we would love your assistance.
In mathematics we have been learning about capacity and revising our skills on addition and subtraction. We will be focussing on developing a variety of strategies including using number facts, counting to and from, finding the differences, bridging to ten and many more. We are trying to teach that there are many more ways to add and subtract moving on from just using their fingers.
In literacy, we have been continuing writing about information reports and recounts. It is very impressing some of the details that students are now beginning to include. A few examples are below.
"On Sunday I went to Valley Reserve. It had shady trees and yellow crested cockatoos. It had a big flying fox and a rushing stream" Markus.
"First we had lunch it was yummy food. Next Adam and Sophie got tattoos. Adam got a scary tattoo and Sophie got a pretty tattoo" Tessa.
"On Sunday I went to Caulfield Park. I scored goals and heard people kicking. I played with a yellow ball. We played in wet grass and I scored hard goals with long and short posts" Stefan.
Lastly we are starting to learn parts of our Level 1 / 2 Soirée. The event will be held on the 12th October. Students are beginning to prepare class routines and group songs, even the choir is singing a song. More details will go out over the coming weeks with regards to costumes and further information.
Year 3 News...
In the lead up to The Olympics in Rio, Year 3 students participated in their own Ormond Olympics. The students were divided into four countries and competed against each other over 4 days in a variety of events including dodge ball, soccer, volleyball, relays and tunnel ball. They were rewarded for teamwork, sportsmanship and effort as well as scoring points for winning events.
There was a fabulous medal ceremony on Wednesday and we have been so proud of all of the athletes' Olympic spirit. As it was the brainchild of Mr Cheverton, many thanks to him for leading the Olympic Committee as well as organising and officiating all events. Many thanks also for the Grade 3 team and head of countries; Ms Cash, Mrs Fernandez, Mrs Tunnock and student teacher, Ms French.
Year 5/6 News...
The Year 5 and 6 Soiree will be held on Tuesday 23rd August at 6:30pm in the Hall.
Students have been learning the art of African Drumming for several weeks now and are looking forward to performing for their loved ones.
Visual Arts News
Alice in Wonderland Mural
It has been wonderful to see the students’ enjoyment and pride in seeing their collaborated artworks in the completed Alice Mural – if you have not had a chance to come and see it, be sure to make your way towards the Art Room.
Golden Wattle Sunday
Students from Year 4, 5 and 6 have been invited to submit artwork to be on display at Box Cottage Museum in Joyce Park, Ormond.
The Golden Wattle Sunday event is being held on Sunday the 28th of August to welcome in the Spring. There will be wattle-themed readings/recitals and Nick Staikos MP State Member for Bentleigh will plant a Golden Wattle sapling.
Our students have been busy investigating and finalising artworks based on the Wattle Tree and have selected various forms of media to complete their works, including dry needle felting, paint, watercolour, charcoal, chalk, silk painting and/or oil pastels.
The students are very excited to be participating in this event and the Ormond community is encouraged to support them and see their wonderful pieces which will be on display in the museum. I have been informed that a small prize will also be awarded to one student in each participating year level.
The students' works will be assessed by:- Rosemary Kelleher, ANA ~ Aust Unity, major sponsors of the event; Mario Mirabile, Caulfield Photography Club, Trish Mirabile, Hughesdale Artists Group.
Interesting Fact: Box Cottage Museum has a historic link to Ormond Primary. During the 1920s, Stefanie Rennick nee Rietman (1918-2001), then residing in the original early settler's cottage, and most likely her brother William Rietman, attended Ormond Primary School. Stefanie would go on to become an arts and crafts teacher at Bentleigh Secondary College, and a widely-known propagator of indigenous plants...
