A slice of Mandarin

A Slice of Mandarin- Children’s Day & Y2 Incursion (23/5/2018)
NI HAO!! It’s getting cold in Australia, but in China, things are just starting to heat up! Most importantly, the annual celebration of CHILDREN’S DAY will kick off on Friday, June 1! On this day, a large gathering is held in the capital city of Beijing, where over 100 children are invited, who represent each of China’s 56 different nationalities. The main idea behind this meeting is to allow the children to know each other better and establish ties for further communication, thereby helping them to work together in the future, much like our exchange programs with our sister schools.
Children’s Day is a day to celebrate the joys of playfulness and childhood, encouraging the recognition of children’s rights, along with their health and happiness. To make the day fun for children, primary schools in China do not have formal classes during this day and instead, children come to school just to play. Schools normally hold performances, sponsor camping trips and show movies. Public attractions offer free admission to parents and children. Parents may cook a child’s favourite meal for dinner.
This year, the Mandarin team has organised a Chinese Incursion for our Grade 2 students to celebrate Children’s Day at our school. On Friday, 1st of June, all Grade 2 students will learn about the history, the culture, the art craft, the music about Lion Dance as well as the kung-fu actions used in a Lion Dance performance.
*Interesting Fact!
Children’s Day is the only day that children in China are allowed to enter the school in their regular clothes, and they don’t get homework!
