Useful Tips for a University Degree Wannabe (UDW)
UDW: definition - a person who is convinced they want to go to University, but are not sure where or exactly what they want to study! Also suffers from ATAR anxiety.
- Choose a degree that allows some flexibility in selecting a sequence of units that is right for you
- Make sure the program offers opportunities for practical work experience (sometimes called Industry Based Learning)
- Do not base your decision solely on what your friends are doing
- LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! Make sure travel time from your residence to the campus is within what you are willing and able to do on a day to- day basis
- Get involved! Get out there and find out what the universities are offering by attending Open Days and asking questions!
- Do not just pick courses based on ATAR alone.
La Trobe University Engineering Link Project
Thursday 11 & Friday 12 April | 8.45am - 4.00pm | La Trobe Bundoora Campus
An Engineering Link Project follows the design – make – appraise model of problem-solving. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will participate in a different engineering module each day, facilitated by a local engineer. Each module is designed to showcase an example of engineering in that discipline, as well as being:
- hands-on
- practical
- relevant to maths and science being studied at school
- interesting
- challenging
- fun!
Students will choose two experiences (one per day). After the engineer has presented the problem to be solved, each group will fully prepare their ideas and proposed engineering solution, present it to the engineer for approval and then construct their prototype. Each group’s solution will be tested to ensure it meets the criteria set, then extended beyond the scope of the design, usually to destruction! La Trobe University staff will also provide detailed information about studying engineering (in general) and at La Trobe University (in particular).
