EARLY ADMISSIONS

Congratulations to the many students who have been successful at Early Admission interviews for the University of Wollongong. It is wonderful to see students being rewarded for their potential in their areas of interest. The diversity of student future interest is always interesting. The different courses students were offered positions in 2019 include: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Pre-Med, Science, Science Education, Environmental Engineering, Business, Social Science and Creative Arts to name a few.

YOUTH OFF THE STREETS SCHOLARSHIP

During the last school holidays, I had the privilege to spend two days in Sydney to be with Claudia from Year 12 who was a recipient for the YOS scholarship. Only 22 students across Australia were selected so it was an honour for Claudia to be a recipient for 2019. This scholarship allows her to meet future financial demands as she begins her tertiary study. YOS provides a mentor to suit each participant and Claudia met hers over the two day workshop and presentation. Mike Munroe, former 60 Minutes presenter was the MC for the event and Father Chris O’Reilly was also present to explain the background of the program that has been in operation for 15 years.

YEAR 11 INTERVIEWS

Currently interviews are being conducted with students in Year 11 to ensure their options beyond Year 12 are on track or to help in the decision-making process. FINANCIAL LITERACY COURSE

Last term a class of Year 10 students took part in the Financial Literacy Cert I course run by the Smith Family here at our school. During the two-day session students learnt about the financial concerns and traps to do with tax, superannuation and loans. This was a practical workshop to develop their knowledge as well as providing them with a national qualification.

The ongoing support by the Smith Family with this free workshop is always appreciated.

FIRST AID COURSE

All of year 10 are invited to participate in a two-day workshop to complete their First Aid Certificate. If any year 11 students missed out last year they are also welcome to attend. Notes will be distributed to students and the workshop will be on the 28th- 29h November. This will be a heavily subsidized course to ensure all can participate. Any students who missed out last year are also welcome to participate

WHITE CARD COURSE

Students who are keen to get into the construction industry or who are doing the Construction Pathways course next year in Year 11, should do the WHS course. Mr Cohen, is qualified and trained to teach the course and this allows it to be cheaper for Lake Illawarra HS students. The course will be conducted on 6th November.
