ILLAWARRA CAREERS EXPO

The Illawarra Career Expo in the Illawarra has been organized for local students for over 40 years and Lake Illawarra HS students went to the Illawarra Sports Stadium Fred Finch Park, at Berkeley. High school students from across the Illawarra region attended and had an opportunity to speak to representatives of over 100 different providers in different sectors of education, businesses and services.

The Illawarra Careers Expo was a great opportunity for our students to seek out hundreds of career options and speak to the variety of representatives all in one place.

WORK EXPERIENCE

A number of students in Year 10 successfully participated in work experience during Term 1. This is a very worthwhile experience for all students to be involved in as it could open doors to further opportunities and build interest towards different careers. Students actively participated in careers such as teaching, manufacturing and fabrication, retail, carpentry, cabinetmaking and hairdressing.

At Lake Illawarra HS, students in Year 10 are able to do work experience again during Term 2 and 3, as well as late Term 4. So, if students are keen to do more than one week of work experience to help finalise future planning it is possible.

IN2UNI YEAR 11 BOOTCAMP

Eight students from the University of Wollongong came to LIHS to talk and do workshops with Year 11 students. This was a fun and interactive way to discuss with students about the decision making process for their future, discovering their learning style and exam preparation. The UOW students are IN2uni Mentors who come and connect with our students to broaden their options, discuss pathways and help our students plan possible futures. It is an excellent partnership with our school and the feedback from a mentor this year is below:

“It was one of the best workshops we have both ever ran and we seemed to work really good together we were able to bounce ideas off each other and have a good banter which really got all the kids involved and they all seemed to have a good time and get something out of it. The kids were all really well behaved and the teachers were awesome as well, all very helpful and willing to throw in their input when we put them on the spot.”
