The Great Backyard Pumpkin Challenge

First Place at the Royal Easter Show

Congratulations to Lake Illawarra High Students, Ryan Skeen, Seth Battye, Angel Balzke, Jarwin Henry and Jai Russell who took part in this year’s Great Backyard Pumpkin Challenge at the Sydney  Royal Easter Show.

The students worked together to create two entries in the ‘Decorate a Pumpkin’ category and we are extremely proud to announce that their entry, ‘Mr Stay Puft’ was awarded first place for excellence.

This is an amazing achievement for these talented students and our school, well done.

Making Macramé in Home Economics

Lake Illawarra High School often provides learning opportunities for their teachers to extend their knowledge to forward on to students. Last week two teachers had the unique occasion to learn alongside their Year 7 class and become skilled in macramé.

This workshop run by Shellharbour City Council provided students with particular coding skills, discovering that continual patterns are fundamental in making macramé. With much patience the Year 7 class completed their macramé wall hanging and were eager to take them home for Mother’s Day. With these newly acquired skills, students will transfer their expertise to use in conjunction with the Design Process, creating their own dynamic macramé project later this term.

Ms Robertson and Mrs Stephen would like to say a big thank you to Shellharbour City Council for developing their knowledge of Macramé to forward on to other students at Lake Illawarra High School.

Public Speaking Prowess:

The ‘Plain Speaking Award’

This year Lake Illawarra High School is participating in the ‘Plain Speaking Award’; a public speaking competition run by the Arts Unit for the NSW Department of Education. The award recognises students who are passionate about modern societal issues and are able to speak decisively and persuasively on their topic of choice. We were very proud to send two of our Year 10 students, Mikayla Amos and Bella Mann, to represent our school and compete for the award. Both girls chose worthy topics to present. Bella raised awareness for mental health issues in young people and

Mikayla delivered a rallying call to address the plight of climate change and pollution, both locally and globally. The girls prepared and delivered an 8 minute speech to their audience, followed by a 3 minute impromptu speech on the topic ‘The best things in life cost.’ They were both incredibly convincing and gave the adjudicator a lot to mull over for his final decision.

While both girls performed very well, Mikayla Amos won the day and was declared the winner of the South Region, which encompasses schools all the way from Wollongong to Goulburn! Mikayla will now take her speech to the NSW State Final in Parramatta on June 14th and represent Lake Illawarra High School in her fight for a place at Nationals. Congratulations to her on her well-deserved success. Well done to both girls for their hard work!
