Principal's Message

Lake Illawarra High is a proud member of the Lake Learning Community which also includes our feeder primary schools of Windang PS, Lake South PS, Mt Warrigal PS, Warilla NorthPS and Primbee PS.

Over the last 6 months each of the schools have worked very closely to ensure that the transition of students from our Primary Schools to High School is as seamless as possible. This year we will be working closely together with not only our transition programs such as student visits, student tracking etc, but also with staff working together across schools to ensure that our teaching is also aligned. We are also very keen to have our high school students and staff working with primary students and staff in all areas to ensure that when our primary students begin high school they are comfortable with not only the new surroundings but also with the learning that will be occurring.

It was fantastic to see so many parents and caregivers at our Parent /Teacher afternoon at the end of last term. Our teachers were really happy to have the chance to speak to so many of their students parents. If at any stage you would like to speak to one of your child's teachers about how they are progressing please contact the school to arrange an interview.

At the time of writing this edition, the NAPLAN exam has started for our year 7 and year 9 students. This year we are doing it online. All that we ask is that the students give it their best shot as the data we get from these tests is so important in helping us target areas of student learning that need that extra bit of support.

Warmest regards

Deputies' Desk

Welcome to Term 2 and welcome to all the new students who have joined us in the past few weeks, I’m sure you will have a great time here at Lake and make many new friends. There are many opportunities this term as the winter sports well and truly get underway, so I would like to encourage all our students to take advantage of this and join a team.

Last week we had a few students attend the debating competition held at Illawarra Sports High School. Our students Mikayla Amos and Bella Mann performed very well, but in particular Mikayla Amos who won the competition and will be heading off to compete at the next round in Parramatta. Ms Scott has more information regarding this in the English article but we would like to congratulate both students and wish Mikayla all the best.

Lake Illawarra High’s very own super fish, Jared Dyer, recently competed at the Hancock Prospecting ‘Australian Age Championships’ held in Adelaide in April. Jared performed exceptionally well by winning 2 Gold medals in the 100m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly, 4 Silver medals in the 50m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley  and 3 Bronze medals in the 100m Backstroke, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Backstroke. You may have also seen Jared on Win news because of his achievements and the fact that Jared has made the NSW Swim team. Jared trains very hard to get these results and we are very proud of his achievements.

Myself and Mr Meizer would like to thank all our staff who assisted with our Athletics carnival and Ms Hartas in particular for her outstanding organisation. We had a great day over at Myimbarr Oval and although the wind did pick up at lunch time, this didn’t faze our kids, who were well behaved and participated at their best. I would like to wish out Zone Athletics team all the best as they race, jump or throw for spots in the Zone team to compete at the regional Athletics carnival in Canberra.

Keep up the great work Lake!

Mr T. Wilson                                                                       Mr C. Meizer
