Languages Day

Languages Day is a great opportunity for the Year 7's to engage in fun activities surrounding Japanese and German culture. The Year 7's had a lot of fun doing sports, craft activities, making films and eating Japanese and German food.

To start off the day, the Japanese students designed Hachimaki (headbands) for their home group with words and images to represent perseverance and unity. Mr. Ballagh then judged each home group’s theme and design and decided that 7F had the best imagery and meaning. Students then made Nengajyo (New Year’s Cards), to exchange with friends and family, and endless Pokemon cards. The German students spent the morning making films based on the vocabulary learnt throughout the year, and got the chance to film them before recess. The award for best short film was given to Zi, Tara, Kitty, and Jemma in HG 7M. The weather conditions limited the German sport activities initially planned. Each German home group played ‘Brennball’ against each other and students were very competitive!  The Japanese students did sports-carnival styled games. The Japanese classes also participated in a Kahoot competition testing their knowledge of Japanese language and culture. Congratulations to 7H for winning the 2018 Languages Day shield.

For morning tea, all students were given the opportunity to try traditional German pretzles and Berliner donuts. During lunchtime, students enjoyed an authentic Japanese bento box with sushi and other delights. All students thoroughly enjoyed their food!

To finish the day, both German and Japanese students enjoyed screenings of popular movies in their learnt language. A special thank you to the staff and other students who assisted in the preparation and running of the day.

Student Reflection

On Friday December 14 the year 7’s participated in Languages Day. In each of the languages the students from each class worked together to earn points for their class. They played different sports, kahoots, made crafts and much more. All of the points earned accumulated towards a class prize. The Japanese classes made hachimaki. The best hachimaki won their class 10,000 points. There was a raffle drawn that also won that person’s class points. At the end of the day the year 7 students learning Japanese watched The Nightmare Before Christmas in Japanese. Overall it was a fun experience for all of the students and everyone had a great time

During the final meeting for the year, the Green Team sorted and packed all the recyclables that were collected through the Recycling station in the main staffroom. Your support and contributions have helped us collect the following and prevented them from going to the landfill:

  • 14 kg of alkaline batteries
  • 14 kg of old pens and textas
  • 10 kg of old mobile phones, chargers
  • 1 kg of postal padded envelopes
  • Several kilos of soft plastics

The Green team would like to thank everyone that contributed items to the recycling station.

Year 9 Ancient Chinese Shadow Puppetry performances for Year 7 TLC

For the final weeks of Year 9 Drama, the students learnt about Puppetry and focused particularly on the art of Shadow Puppetry. Over these weeks, they created Shadow Puppets from scratch and put together performances based off ancient Chinese fables. On November 29 and 30, the Year 9 Drama students performed their ancient Chinese Shadow Puppet performances for four Year 7 TLC classes in the TLC block. This was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 9's to perform to an audience and also share in some cross-curricular learning for both the Year 7's and Year 9's. Thank you to each student how performed and created some incredible performances and puppets. Thank you also Tyrone Ingham, Annabel Barton, Zac Ansell, Laura Durham and Jess Oliver for letting the Year 9's come down and perform for the lovely Year 7 classes. They had a blast performing and it was amazing experience for them all.

2018 Community Spirit and Leadership Award

Last Friday evening I had the pleasure of attending the 2018 Community Spirit and Leadership Awards. Each year this award is presented to one student from each school in the Hotham electorate. There awards recognise the achievements of students throughout the year, as well as the leadership they have shown within their school and broader communities. Young people demonstrating community leadership is so important . It leads to better and stronger communities. Sam Corea has been one of the College Captains this year who has proved to be a warm and passionate leader. He has worked hard to unite all the year levels. He was presented this award by Clare O’Neill, the Federal member of Hotham, proudly watched on by his parents and sister.
