Interschool Sport
In my early days at Brentwood, I used to take teams out to compete against our local schools and our students would be intimidated by these other schools. This was because other school teams ALL wore school sports uniform and looked like a team. So over time, Brentwood improved our sports uniform and specialized uniform items to compete in. We lifted our standards and expectations, and we became the team with a strong presence at sporting events. Schools know when the Brentwood team arrives!
I would like to thank all senior students who competed at the Monash Division round robin day this week. You represented Brentwood with good sportsmanship and you definitely looked the part! No student was asked to remain at school for being out of uniform.
We had representation in all sports offered. I would like to thank our staff coaches who volunteer their time to coach/manage and provide opportunities for our students to compete.

Congratulations to the Baseball, Softball and Cricket teams who won the Monash Divison and will be representing Brentwood at Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) later this year.
Unfortunately some students missed out on competing due to not consenting/paying in time. For all school sports days/events, consent must be obtained two school days prior to event. If you are having trouble consenting, contact (phone call/email) must be made with the school office prior to the due date.
The Monash Division Interschool Swimming is next week (Thurs Feb 28) at Aquanation in Ringwood. I wish all swimmers the best of luck for the upcoming meet and remind them that consent is due by Tuesday night 11:59pm.

Senior Girls Table Tennis
On Tuesday February 19th the senior girls table tennis team competed in the division interschool competition. On the day, we had the privilege of competing against John Monash A and B teams. While we were able to convincingly win all our games against John Monash B, we were unable to get over the line against their A team. Unfortunately, we did not make it through to the next round, however we were competitive on the day and enjoyed a full day of back to back table tennis matches. Thank you to the girls who came along to compete: Monica Chen, Tina Kong, Emily Lee, Crystal Lim and Isabella Pang!

Senior Baseball
Well, what a day! We left Brentwood with only 8 of the required 9 students in the senior baseball team. Some had played before and some were playing the game for the first time. We were lucky to have our first match against the John Monash B team and it gave Brentwood a chance to get a feel for the game. I rotated students around the diamond in each innings, allowing them to have a go at various roles. The team were in good spirits even though we lost in 3 innings, 2 runs to 10 runs.
Our second match against John Monash A was our first match that counted towards the Monash Division champion. After our thrashing from John Monash B, we were confident that we would have to enjoy the day and play the game as best we could to be good competition for our competitors.
John Monash A came out strong and after the first innings, Brentwood was down 1-3. After a quick motivational chat about playing smart and good communication out on the field prior to the second innings, amazingly we scored 4 runs and John Monash zero! The team were pumped as we were now up 5-3 at the end of the second innings. Unexpectedly, the umpire called time and game, but I knew there was still 20 minutes to play, so I approached both the umpire and John Monash A coach to continue the game. In the third innings, Brentwood scored 2 more runs and John Monash A came out to chase us down in equal innings. Unfortunately for John Monash A, they only scored a further 3 runs making it a victory for the Brentwood team at the real “time and game”. Brentwood won 7-6 in a very exciting game.
Brentwood’s third match of the day was against Wellington A. Again this was another important match. If Wellington A were to win it would create a 3 way tie and the Monash Division champion would be decided on a count back. Wellington A knew this and were keen to challenge us for a win!
At the end of the first innings, Brentwood were tied 3-3. Brentwood was again pumped at how well we were playing. Wellington A came out strong in the second innings scoring 5 runs and we knew we had to hit well. The entire Brentwood team made it base and scored the 7 runs (playing 7 run rule) and at the end of the second inning we were up 10-8. Incredibly, in the third innings, Wellington A did not score. The “time and game” call was imminent, and as we went out to bat Brentwood’s third innings we knew that we had won this match. We scored one more run before “time and game” was called and confirming Brentwood’s win, 11-8!
The Brentwood faces were beaming, recognizing the achievement of the day. This was a huge effort for a team of 8 players and I am very proud of how you developed as a lineup and played with exceptional sportsmanship. Good luck at EMR on April 30.

Luke Russell
Luke Russell, who is a student in Year 8, has been selected for the Australian U/15 Boys Softball team. Earlier this year, Luke represented the Victorian U/15 Boys Softball Team as a pitcher in Canberra. Then, just a week ago, he received a letter announcing that he had been selected to represent Australia in July. What an outstanding achievement!

Senior Boys Volleyball
Two boys’ teams competed at the State Volleyball Centre on Tuesday 19th February, coached by Alyssa Jacobs. The sportsmanship demonstrated by the players was fantastic, they put their heart and soul into each game and represented Brentwood with pride. It was long day with 4 matches and only a short break for lunch. Students shone on the court with their athletic flair and willingness to put their body on the line. Congratulations to both teams for finishing a credible 3rd place.
