Staff v Student Memorial Cricket Match
Today, the 15th annual ‘Daniel Draper Memorial Cricket Match’ is being held on the College oval (next to Whites Lane). The match, between staff and students, is played in the memory of Daniel (pictured) who sadly passed away in December 2004. Daniel was a keen cricketer and sportsman who had just completed Year 9 at Brentwood. On this day both staff and students take time to reflect on a life cut short and recognise the support, encouragement and hope we all share as part of the Brentwood community.
The first ever staff v student cricket match started badly for the staff when our wicket keeper failed to appreciate the lightning pace of the opening bowler, Mark Oudshoorn. The poor wicket keeper’s mouth and teeth have now largely recovered from the damage caused by that very first ball in the first match. However, the demands of the game in the Australian context have finally caught up with this UK expat and he has decided to retire as a player and umpire this year’s game instead.
Surprisingly, and perhaps with the assistance of some favourable umpiring, the staff have been very competitive over the history of the past 14 matches. The current score stands at 7 – 6 in favour of the students (with one drawn match). All students, parents and friends of the College are invited to watch this spectacle. The Twenty20 match will start at 2.45pm and finish at around 5.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there. May the best team win. And finally, good luck to Mr Exton in his new role as umpire of today’s game.
