Mellor 1/2- Maths

Semester 2 Mathematics.

Term 3

Year 1.  Students will complete the last few areas of measurement such as time and temperature and then move onto Geometry.

Students will be able to recognise and describe a range of 2D and 3D shapes, as well as become familiar with positional terms which describe the location of objects.  Towards the end of term students will be involved with a range of probability activities and learn a range of ways to record and share statistics they have gathered.

Year 2.  Similarly, students will complete measurement areas of time and temperature before learning about 2D and 3D shapes in Geometry.  The focus for Year 2 is to be able to name, describe the features and make a range of polygon (2D) and solid (3D) shapes using a variety of materials.  This includes being able to use location terms accurately and be able to understand transformations.

Then students will gather statistics and predict the probability of a range of activities. They will use the information to make tables and graphs, and will have the opportunity to interpret them.

Term 4

The final focus for the year for Year 1 and 2 students will be on Number and Algebra.

Year 1.  Students will use a wide range of equipment and experience a variety of activities that focus on collections to 100. They will continue to learn about partitioning and place value to understand and effectively use the base 10 number system confidently.

Year 2.  Further development of grouping, partitioning and rearrangement of collections up to 1000 will be the focus this term.  Students will further develop their understanding of hundreds, tens and ones to facilitate more efficient counting strategies.  They will begin to be more proficient at division as grouping into equal sets in a range of simple problems.
