Wellbeing

Health & Wellbeing Expo

If you walked into Lyndhurst Primary School’s gym on the 8th of November, you would have heard the laughter and seen the broad smiles of the grade 6 students at our very first Grade 6 Health and Wellbeing Expo. The grade 6’s were participating in one of Project Rockit’s Sync programs-navigating the online world. They were here to talk to the grade 6’s about cyberbullying, but not just in the old and boring lecturing way, no. They were making this learning experience fun and enjoyable, by getting us involved.

Throughout the rest of the day, the grade 6’s rotated through 4 activities. If you went up into the portables near the dry creek and headed into the grade 6’s classrooms, you would have heard the sound of Nicole explaining how to do CPR and first aid. We learnt how to do CPR and what to do if you are bleeding. If you headed up into Mr Carey’s classroom, you would have smelt the different smells of Rita’s oils. Rita talked to us about transitioning into high school, ways to be mindful and we wrote down what we are grateful for. Next door, in Mr Bacon’s classroom, you could hear the voice of Lara from Headspace talking about good mental health. Lara talked about what mental health is, good and bad. Back over in the gym you could see rows of grade 6’s attempting to do different yoga poses that Mel from Yogamigos was teaching. Mel taught us some yoga and we talked about what we are grateful for. On each yoga mat was a quote, which helped the grade 6’s begin to feel calm and good about themselves.

As the bell went for lunch, grade 6’s ran from each end of the school to the back basketball court. There Mrs Smith, Mrs Mills, Mrs Howells, Devmika, Olivia and Allie were handing out bread, sausages, sauce, cordial and watermelon. The 360 Youth Bus was there for the grade 6 students and at 1:15, a group of grade 6 students headed back to the gym. When you went into the gym, you could see John and Greg from Casey Shorin-ryu teaching grade 6 students karate; with the help of Devmika, Methuki and Vinudi. At the end of the day, some students gave Mel, Rita Nicole and Lara a plant and a thank you note. It was then 3:30, teachers handed out show bags and that was the end of Lyndhurst Primary School’s very first Health and Wellbeing Expo.

All of the grade 6’s had a great day and we are really grateful that this day happened. We hope that next year the new grade 6’s will have a Health and Wellbeing Expo and that they can make it as awesome as the one that this year’s was. Once again, a huge thanks to all of the people above, especially Mrs Smith.
