DAV Round #1 2020

St Bede’s College is fielding eight teams in the Debating Association of Victoria competition this year, with representation in each of the four sections A-D. After a sustained period of success the squad has entered a phase of rebuilding in 2020, presenting opportunity for some new debaters to learn the craft and compete in the Brighton Region. The St Bede’s College campaign began well on Wednesday 11 March, with success experienced in many forms; winning 5 from 6 debates, attaining four Best Speaker awards, presenting many talented maiden speeches and the establishment of new team bonds.

 

Results:

A Grade – Will Devlin (College Debating Captain 2020), Sam Murray and Jack Pooley, defeated  Brighton Grammar 1 by 3 points. Best Speaker, Will Devlin.

Topic – “That we regret the rise of streaming platforms.”

B Grade 1 – Elijah McEvoy, Lyndon Bulman and Lachlan Doyle, defeated St Leonard’s 1 by 6 points.

Best Speaker, Elijah McEvoy.

Topic – “That we should ban climate change denial.”

B Grade 2 – Bye.

C Grade – Sean Courtier, Hunter Trumble and Bishaal Gurung, defeated St Leonard’s  by 3 points.

Best Speaker – Bishaal Gurung.

Topic – That children should be legally required to take care of their parents rather than placing them in aged care.

D Grade 1 – Austen Warfe, Joshua Gould and Nathan Murphy, defeated McKinnon Secondary College by four points.

Best Speaker – Joshua Gould

D Grade 2 – Bye

D Grade 3 – Finn Gleeson, Sam Feekman and Jeremy Cormick, defeated St Leonard’s 2 by 1 point.

D Grade 4 – Tom Gregory, Liam Casey and Thomas McKeown, defeated  by Star of The Sea 2, by 4 points.

Topic – “That we should limit the number of cars that each household can own.”

Congratulations to all debaters on a fine effort in this first round. Thank you to staff mentors and assisting staff supervisors on the evening: Mr Carl De Souza, Miss Theresa Lochery, Miss Nicola Connolly, Mr Victor Tanti and Ms Jessica Kirk.

 

The squad is most appreciative of your time and support. Thank you also to the many parents who attended to support the boys on the evening, your presence was a great encouragement to the squad.
